Description

Enron (stylised as ENRON) is a 2009 play by the British playwright Lucy Prebble, based on the Enron scandal. But, although it had more room to manoeuvre at the Minerva, Lucy Prebble's play and Rupert Goold's production are so strong that they survive the move.

In Enron, one of the most infamous scandals in finanacial history is transformed into a theatrical epic. Amanda Drew as his rival, Tim Pigott-Smith as Enron's avuncular founder, and Tom Goodman-Hill as the greed-driven Fastow, haunted by the scaly raptors which symbolise the shadow-companies, are also first-rate. He also stated its failure to earn nominations at the Tony Awards in major categories was its "kiss of death". Enron premiered at the Minerva Festival Theatre, Chichester, on 11th July 2009 and transferred to the Royal Court on 17th September 2009, before opening in the West End and on Broadway in Spring 2010.The final sense of justice for Fastow and Skilling, very satisfying, and Claudia Roe’s final word, a thrilling “I told you so”.

The characters were risky but not enough to be questionable, and Skillings development (or lack there of) was the best part of the play. Mixing classical tragedy with savage comedy, Enron is published in Methuen Drama's Modern Classics series, featuring a new introduction by Natasha Tripney. The velociraptors in Jurassic Park symbolize nature's response to man's hubris, the metaphorical ones that are deployed here are simply greed embodied.
