Description

It’s the late 1930s and daring industrialist Bruce Wayne masquerades as the Batman at night, fighting against crooked politicians and bigoted secret societies. Batman is not just criticized for being a vigilante but also for being an immoral element against the ultra-right. This comic issue, event, or limited series takes place in its own separate continuity as an Elseworlds story; although it may exist within a larger Elseworlds continuity as part of its series. Mostly it was a strong sense of isolationism, letting the radicals and reactionaries of the world destroy each other while America lives in peace.

The familiar bevy of villains make the rounds here, but as fascist political leaders rather that 'name' villains. In standard settings, Penguin, Two-Face, and the Joker have all made their dislike of Nazis known on various occasions. Dark energies hold this carcass together, yet withered as it may seem, it is possessed of terrifying fortitude. For the most part, Chaykin's penciling is perhaps one of the saving graces for this trade paperback. In Batman: Dark Allegiances, the story takes place in pre-World War II America, with Batman teaming up with Alfred and Catwoman to stop an assassination attempt on F. As the flames of war ignite Europe, a lone masked vigilante fights a battle on the American homefront to keep a secret weapon from falling into enenmy hands, while sinister figures fan the fires of racism!

The result is stories that make characters who are as familiar as yesterday seem as freash as tomorrow. Sinister Minister: Reverend Jones is the leader of the White Legion, a knockoff of the KKK complete with swastikas on their hoods, and is complicit in a scheme to assassinate the president and Adolf Hitler in the name of American Fascism. But, from nowhere, a mysterious Bat-Man appears to battle democracy's foes and possibly to save the world. In Elseworlds, heroes are taken from their usual settings and put into strange times adn places- some that have existed or might have existed, and others that can't, couldn't, or shouldn't exist. Adolf Hitler himself turns up late in the piece and the final confrontation, involving Batman, Joker, Hitler and Roosevelt is, quite frankly, morally perverse in a delightful way.

Alt Disney: In addition to being this continuity's Penguin, Milton Biggsley is also a decidedly unflattering stand-in for Walt Disney. All in all, Batman: Dark Allegiances is an interesting experiment of merging a Batman story with the Pre-World War II era, which has Bruce Wayne as Batman trying to stop a plan that would force the world into another World War. Batman: Dark Allegiances is an Elseworlds graphic novel published by DC Comics in 1998, written and penciled by Howard Chaykin. He grew up a poor orphan, and discovered a knack for industrial design, finally becoming a world-famous architect (as well as developer or special equipment for the military, which he first 'tests out' as Batman). Batman's foes are inexplicably renamed, but are clearly recognizable as Penguin, Two-Face, Joker, and Catwoman. The only thing I thought was odd is that Batman's rogues gallery appears but they all have different names. There is an Elseworlds story element that Batman wasn't born into wealth and privilege, but his parents still died in tragic circumstances for standing up against evil.
