The joker sets are ingenious and there are plenty of opportunities for the more advanced lifter to customize and tweak the programming even further. A new 5/3/1 warm-up method is included that ensures your body is ready for a heavy 5/3/1 workout this warm-up is optional and is just a different warm-up from the original. Wendler’s 5/3/1 Boring But Big (BBB) program is renowned for both its brutal simplicity and serious results. The PR sets mean you are constantly being challenged and you can get to see every workout the progress you're making. And anything that allows me to train harder and reach my goals quicker is worth its weight in gold to me.

Jim has been incredibly generous in sharing so much online, that even though this book doesn't delve too deeply into the basics, one can easily get that by googling '531 Jim Wendler' or something like that. When I first wrote the original program in 2008, I had no idea that I’d be able to expand the program into what it is today. Yes, your TM goes up after each cycle and eventually you will not be able to hit the required reps and have to reset.

The “original” version of the program published on T-Nation in 2009 does, in fact, only contain 3 working sets for each primary movement. Programme according to the principles and you will get stronger and learn to prioritise the important lifts. A few cycles down the line, you’ll be on the last set of a week of 5s and find yourself aiming for as many reps as possible at 100kg again – and this time you’ll probably manage 12!

All four phases of this program are based on the principles of the 5/3/1 program and the Beyond 5/3/1 program. The principles of the 5/3/1 program kept me grounded and I made sure that every variation stayed true to them: emphasize big, multi-­­joint movements, start light, progress slow and set personal records. The main criticisms that remain, at least for me, is that he doesn’t provide a way to systematize the autoregulation provided by Joker sets and the overall volume done on assistance work.I’ve combined strength work, dynamic work and mobility/flexibility training with one goal in mind — getting you stronger in the squat, bench press, press and deadlift. True, there is assistance work to bring up volume if you want it – but I approached 531 thinking that assistance work was a bonus, rather than an integral part of the success of the programme. Please understand that it would be virtually impossible to offer a comprehensive review of every single variation of 5/3/1 in a single review.
