i wanted to test out and listen to the 95c but unfortunately the stall did not have any demo stylus available for listening. My choice would be the VM95SH – yet the VM95ML had greater treble confidence, if a brighter balance that did or did not suit according to recorded balance. But not everyone was able to sit perfectly positioned with the beams of the Maggies, so that unknown variable could have affected the outcome in some small part.

This demand is particularly germane to turntable/tonearm performance, as the Analog LP’s superior potential for unlimited resolution demands designs that not only attain extremely high sonic fidelity but, most importantly, faithfully communicate all the musical techniques – timing, rhythm, drive, phrasing, punctuation, dynamics, and articulation – of all the instruments recorded. I can think of several of his French contemporaries that would have made for better listening and sonic comparison, e. Unfortunately, there may be occasions where this time frame may not be met due to unforeseen circumstances; in this instance, we deliver product/s as soon as we can.

suggested tracking force (2g optimal), recommended load capacitance of 100 to 200pF (load+cable capacitance) and the standard 47kOhm resistive load. Elliptical styli better read high frequencies, giving greater treble definition than a simple conical. Both give extraordinary high frequency definition, even on inner grooves where they are able to read very short mechanical wavelengths, our measurements confirmed. If you don't have a turntable that can be adjusted to match the requirements of this stylus, you're probably wasting your money. Sure, it's noisier and more prone to skipping than the microline, but I find myself listening to them back and forth and honestly - if you just want to have fun listening to records with an enjoyable sound at bare minimum, you aren't missing out on much going with the conical.

To me, track 1 got nearer to the sort of sound that I hear in there, but both are rather strident, perhaps due to the digitisation process.

The VM95ML Microlinear gave a reasonably bright tonal balance with delicious retrieval of fine high frequency detail that came across with firm confidence. File 2 does sound a bit muffled in direct comparison but when we go back to File 1 it sounds hysterical (from hysteria, not by making us laugh). I have read and practiced over the years that you do want to turn on that last bit, which is above the -6db threshold (6 x the bit rate is the dynamic range). Audio Technica usefully explain that life expectancy is 500 hours for conical, 300 hours for elliptical, 800 hours for Shibata and 1000 hours for Microlinear.

The SH is as capable as the ML but less brightly lit and arguably preferable, but not always: Jackie Leven’s The Wanderer on inner groves fared best with the ML. There was some softening of images across the sound stage and a de-focussed effect was apparent, especially on inner grooves with the Trondheim Soloists behind Marianne Thorsen; here the ML and SH kept them all well separated but the EN introduced blur. Having a AT-VM540ML, I believe that File 1 is the Audio Technica -- a shade on the bright side of neutral, and I think it shows, particularly at the end. Designed for a longer life and richer sound, the Audio Technica AT-VM95ML offers two benefits in one. But these modifications to the turntable and arm helped the VM95ML to begin to show some of its musical and sonic potential.

Audio Technica has always opted for tightly controlled bass instead of loose and heavy bass designed to impress the naïve, a design decision that pays strong dividends in musical communication.
