Maar de relatie tussen beiden is niet passend in de tijd en atmosfeer waarin het verhaal zich afspeelt.

Doch verdwijnt Louise, de protagonist vaak op de achtergrond doordat Gilles een bijzonder fascinerend personage is. This book also is heavily influenced by the Tarot cards the early French cards I read the Tarot which made this special for me. The third installment in Mosse’s The Burning Chambers series, THE GHOST SHIP is billed as an adventure on the high seas. Her quest to break the rules is heart-pounding and vibrant and taking the journey with Louise ,and following her adventure, is everything you could want in a pirate story . A gorgeously written, utterly absorbing epic and, despite being set in the sixteenth century, has some very pertinent messages for our time about the evils of religious persecution and the transcendent power of love and family.

Set in France, Amsterdam and the Canary Islands, the novel follows the fortunes of Louise and of Gilles Barenton, a young wine merchant. Fiction includes the multimillion-selling Languedoc Trilogy ( Labyrinth , Sepulchre , Citadel ), The Joubert Family Chronicles ( The Burning Chambers , The City of Tears , The Ghost Ship ), and number one bestselling Gothic fiction including The Taxidermist’s Daughter .

Louise is fleeing a miscarriage of justice; her lover, Gilles Barenton, is at risk of being exposed - she is forced to masquerade as her brother. To say I loved the previous two novels in The Joubert Family Chroniclesby the multi-million bestselling author Kate Mosse is an understatement. Her quest to break the rules is heart-pounding and vibrant and taking the journey with Louise ,and following her adventure, is everything you could want in a pirate story. She is brave, intelligent, loyal and reading about her transforming into such a powerful woman was pure joy. This book requires you to read The Burning Chambers and The City of Tears for a proper understanding.

Right when Louise finally starts coming into her own as a character and taking charge of her own life, we get a prologue of another character who is trying to find her many years later as she vanished off the face of the earth. While her and her crew are hunting for pirates they come across a mysterious ghost ship, silently floating around the Barbary coast with only one survivor, a slave who they offer safety to. From the ending I know the next book will likely tell us the rest of Louise's story but because of this it feels more like a book to take us between stories, travelling with the ship to take the characters to the next setting. However, this wasn’t the book I was expecting so the many subplots of the characters’ back stories seemed like barriers to what I thought would be the main story of an adventure at sea.
