Aoife Dooley is an illustrator, author and comedian Ireland whose first Children’s book was published in 2019 by Little Island Books. The illustration style is really fun and the story is a great mix of funny, gripping and thought-provoking. I read this to see if it would be suitable for my 10 year old, who is autistic, and I really loved it. Hotjar sets this cookie to know whether a user is included in the data sampling defined by the site's daily session limit. The three way chats, in which they are joined by other animals, about web spinning, themselves, other humans—are as often informative as amusing, and the whole tenor of appealing wit and pathos will make fine entertainment for reading aloud, too.

Drawn from the author’s own life experiences, this is told from the perspective of Frankie, a girl with autism. After all, there are the questions from Doctor Moran, and then the meetings between her mum and Principal Daly. Our young reviewer is colour-blind and comments that unlike many graphic novels he was still able to appreciate the different coloured-tones in this book. She describes how her tiny people fill her head, ‘each with their own job’ and sometimes ‘making her say and do the wrong things’.Payments made using National Book Tokens are processed by National Book Tokens Ltd, and you can read their Terms and Conditions here. I was incredibly lucky to be able to read an early copy of this wonderful graphic novel about finding family and autism a few months back, and immediately fell for Aoife Dooley's wit, storytelling and gorgeous brightly coloured artwork. This experience has been fantastic primarily for the children, the school and also for me (professionally). Some parts felt unfinished, like the character development of Nadine, the most notorious bully; and others felt sped up at warp speed, like Frankie's relationship to her father. It was such a pleasure to meet you both, and I really appreciated how smoothly and professionally you ran everything.

To Frankie, she feels like an alien at times - like she doesn't fit in, like she doesn't say the right thing, like she seems to annoy the people around her. I gave the book four stars rather than five (and say “mostly” non-ableist) due to the overemphasis of the word “weird” to describe Frankie and autism. Frankie and her friend are on a field trip and jump in a giant mud puddle up to their waists right before Frankie's bully appears to harass Frankie. Unfortunately, there was one use of the word “girls” to describe Frankie and her friends late in the book, destroying that hope.

When this friend trio snuck out, they faced being grounded or extra chores which seemed reasonable and relatable.
