I generally don't mind teaching my kids new terms and phrases, but this one felt out of place for the audience. As he goes from creature to creature, Max shows the readers that no question is too dumb or unworthy of being asked, let alone answered. He sets out to find a mouse to chase, but he doesn't know what one looks like, and he doesn't know all the other creatures cats like to chase either! With its gruff hero, vibrant, strong colours, bold design and spare text, this story about looking beyond appearances has a satisfying punchy simplicity and jazzy feel. When Max finally confronts the monster, he realizes that being Max the Brave may not be as great as he thought.
