Description

With the way the introduction was written, who knows what was lost to history and what the translator had the liberty of changing. This is arguably a more literal and authoritative translation, with useful notes, more suited perhaps to readers who wish to make a closer study of the text. The style of writing that permeates the text is one that is simplified, straightforward, and perhaps reflecting Aurelius' Stoic perspective.

By an accident of fate, many of Fronto’s letters to Marcus have survived, and they illustrate the close relationship between student and teacher. The work was never officially titled, so “Meditations” is a title that has been frequently assigned to it.Tony Campolo - speaking on Christ - reminded us that Christ never said, "Love the sinner, hate the sin. In much of this work I found that Aurelius's version of Stoicism to have much common ground with the tenants espoused in the New Testament. His company, Brass Check, has advised companies such as Google, TASER, and Complex, as well as Grammy Award winning musicians and some of the biggest authors in the world.

Aurelius’ writings on fame seemed to resonate with me in Waterfield’s translation, the death writings stuck out more when I read the Hays translation. His awareness of his own mortality and how transient life is made him grateful for every day and for every person in his life. He’s not someone whose work is likely to resonate with people in the same way that the Meditations seems to do, but I think he’s fascinating from a historical point of view: he’s really someone who’s on the cusp between classical culture and the Christian middle ages and he reflects aspects of both. It‘s such a unique comforting feeling, reading the thoughts of a young roman emporer and relating to them. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who feels lost in life and is looking to find the tools on how to best approach life's uncertainties and challenges as well as rise above their circumstances.WE HAVE MULTIPLE OPTIONS IN COLOR OF LEATHER RED, GREEN, BLUE, MAGENTA, TAN, DEEP BROWN, BLACK AND WITH BLACK LABELS. Close imitation of Attic was not required because Marcus Aurelius wrote in a philosophical context without thought of publication.

If you were to compile a catalogue of "debts and lessons" like the first book of the Meditations, who would appear in it? One of the questions people ask me most often is: “Which edition of The Meditations would it be best for me to read first? He claims that the only way a man can be harmed by others is to allow his reaction to overpower him. This account of Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius is an insightful book on the ideas of righteous living and facing adversities. Constantly run down the list of those who felt intense anger at something: the most famous, the most unfortunate, the most hated, the most whatever. And it’s a very different sort of project, much more technical and meant mainly for academic readers; I doubt it will sell more than a few hundred copies, mostly to academic libraries. The modern history of the Meditations dates from the issue of the first printed edition ( editio princeps) by Wilhelm Xylander in 1558 or 1559.
