Grey is the other important Classic Space colour, but TLG changed their shade of grey a decade ago so naturally the parts here are Light Bluish Gray [BL]/Medium Stone Grey [TLG]. Would have been nice as said if there had been some sort of land based vehicle in the set , but its a sweet set as it is, a good parts pack for any neo-space builder.

The cavity gets topped with a folding 6X6 webbed radar dish (Element ID 4211487 4285); a part that just screams Classic Space. Two jet engines, first appearing in 1981 and last seen in 2010's Luke's Landspeeder, accompany the obligatory loudspeakers/manoeuvring thrusters which no Classic Spaceship should be without. I’m also not sure I see much utility for the “broken” helmet, though the cover of Inherit the Stars springs to mind. More space seats appear in modules two and three, which begin to show off the colour scheme of blue, greys light and dark, black and yellow. In short, a beautiful ship that works wonderfully as a Lego Movie piece, fits in perfectly with a Classic Space collection, or just for parts for you to build your own grand Classic Space adventure. If the item comes direct from a manufacturer, it may be delivered in non-retail packaging, such as a plain or unprinted box or plastic bag.

Four of the figures are exclusive to this set, and Benny is only available otherwise in the pricier Sea Cow; you've got to love Wyldstyle's outfit. Most, sadly, are stickered but I'm overjoyed that the 2X4 18° slopes in Blue [BL]/Bright Blue [TLG] with the Classic Space logo are printed parts (Element ID 6078302 | Design ID 30363). Although Emmet can sit comfortably even wearing his Piece, his helmet prevents closing the cockpit lid fully in this position. The big cockpit canopy can open to ninety degrees, revealing a spacious interior with seating for three, even allowing for hoodies, airtanks or pieces of resistance. I think part of the reason some people prefer fleshies in NCS is so that the yellow-suited figs don't have suits that match their skin color.

I’ve thought about picking up a second one for my daughter, actually, to go alongside the Shuttle Adventure set (which I would have been crazy for as a kid). Certainly, the 'LL929' decals are part of the set's charm, and the white stripe along the sides of the cockpit looks smart, even if it isn't completely essential. Push the middle exhaust to extend the wings, unleash the hidden spring-loaded cannons and fire the stud blasters. They have a good velocity and travel a decent distance, although I wouldn't say they're going leave a mark on a person, if you're hit by one some feet away, I'm sure they should knock Lego guys over. Highlights of this selection for me are the four black inverted bows, new to me but in several sets since last year; the gun with clip, which features in several Movie sets; and the Piece of Resistance, new here in (I think) pearl dark grey Flat Silver.

The element selection of course plays a big part too, such as the 'loudspeakers' and the ribbed jet engines, and the stickered parts heavily reference designs and fonts from that era. A UCS-style stand would work, but if given a choice I'd plump for retractable landing gear, which would help to disguise those ugly Technic blocks which are all-too visible under the wings. Of course, that didn’t stop me from putting him on top of the ship when it’s on display (and tucking Batman from the angry kitty set in there as well), but you have to remove him to swoosh the ship around. There's one more element in this set that I really liked, though it's about as far from a "New Element" as you can get - the 2x4 brick in Bright Red. In total, the number of vehicles included in the set is four: not only do you have the main spaceship and Robo Police interceptor, but the spaceship's detachable wing flyers each have their own cockpit into which you can place your minifigures. They then arrive at the city of Bricksburg where many Lego people around the Lego World were fighting Lord Business' Micro Managers.

Normally I put off many of my summer Lego purchases until Brickfair Virginia, but in the case of this one it may be hard to hold off! Even so, I’m generally happier with clear-backed stickers than I am with printed parts these days, so I’ll take it. The huge, detailed logo is lacking, but the dark grey stripes and the contouring of the corner wedges do help to smarten and modernise the look. There's more Classic Space appeal in bags six and seven, and I'm not talking just about the two more CS logo slopes. It's great for those who like a bit of a challenge and there are extra building instructions on the official Lego site if you need a helping hand. I am not yet sold on the set, I would have loved to see more space in the back or a separation function instead of the wingspan feature, as well as a ground control or some look alike friends for Benny. For the entire fight with the ship, MetalBeard was a passenger sitting on the back and smacking around robots with laser sharks or cannonballs or something.
