Set two generations before Batman's birth, the series will focus on Slam Bradley as he investigates the disappearance of a Wayne member. Slam gets hired to handle the ransom exchange for the kidnapping of the Wayne's baby daughter, and much like the real life Lindbergh kidnapping things get more complicated from there. The Batman bat symbol doesn't have a clear-cut role in the story, but it is significant as a marker of the Wayne family.

Superstar creators Tom King and Phil Hester team up for the first time to tell the definitive origin of Gotham City: how it became the cesspool of violence and corruption it is today, how it harbored and then unleashed the sin that led to the rise of the Dark Knight. comic) Batman and Robin (comic) Batman and Robin Eternal (comic) Batman/Superman (comic) Batman v Superman (General Mills) Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (comic) Batman: Arkham Unhinged Batwing (comic) Catwoman (comic) Detective Comics (comic) Earth 2 (comic) Earth 2: Society (comic) Gotham Academy (comic) Gotham Academy: Second Semester (comic) Gotham by Midnight (comic) Grayson (comic) Harley Quinn (comic) Injustice: Gods Among Us (comic) Injustice: Gods Among Us: Ground Zero (comic) Justice League (comic) Justice League/Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (comic) Justice League of America (Rebirth) Mother Panic (comic) New Suicide Squad (comic) Nightwing (comic) Poison Ivy: Cycle of Life and Death (comic) Red Hood/Arsenal (comic) Red Hood and the Outlaws (comic) Robin: Son of Batman (comic) Teen Titans Go! I was expecting it to be set during the establishment of Gotham and probably have some more mystical aspects mixed in, like Dark Knight, Dark City.

It’s a time period with the potential to offer a interesting look at an as of yet unexplored part of Gotham’s history that could give context to Batman’s crusade. My only complaint with the art of this issue is the opening fight scene, which is confusingly juxtaposed with the chaos of rioters in the streets of Gotham. The veneer of respectability surrounding Gotham City has collapsed, and blood is in the streets when a black woman is blamed for killing the Wayne’s baby daughter.

You’re offering a new interpretation of the characters, but the baggage of what those characters represent is still there. The title page has fine print that reads in part, "This comic contains language of a racially offensive nature and may not be suitable for all age groups. At best it’s trying to fit a square peg in a round hole, and at worst it’s a complete disregard for the sandbox you’re playing in. There are even a couple of panels where Slam looks just like Humphrey Bogart, which I feel has to be intentional.

It has the lowest crime rate in the country and poised to become even greater with Richard Wayne close to opening a state of the art chemical plant that will thrust the city to even bigger heights. No longer was the slaying of Thomas and Martha that one fateful night in Crime Alley the crisis point which created the Gotham we all know.

There are also some very cringey foreshadowing/easter eggs/winks to the reader that again feel incredibly forced: “bat-man,” Richard Wayne’s “cherry cave,” crime alley, and more. My main complain would be Sam Bradley’s origins, sounding phony and opportunist in this day and age. The bold lines and dark shadows are perfect for emulating that “city lights streaming in through a pair of blinds” aesthetic that one expects. Slam Bradley knows the truth, and he’s knocking at the door of Wayne manor looking for answers – or maybe it’s repercussions.

So far everything has been handled with a deft hand and I’m enjoying the way that such a serious topic is being woven into the story (though having such a serious warning at the beginning did make it a bit ridiculous when the comic made sure to still censor any swear words. Recomendable, solo, si no te importa que Batman no participe en la historia ni esperas al mejor King en este tomo autoconclusivo de 192 páginas.
