David Winter was shot to death Monday in the little town of Old Malton in North Yorkshire, 180 miles north of London.

Police later disclosed that "While he was [in Saudi Arabia] his wife formed a liaison with another man and he got a 'Dear John' letter, which must have had a traumatic effect on him. The Sierra sped off and was later followed by another patrol car: they riddled it with bullets near Burton Salmon. A Leeds man, dubbed the Phantom of the Forest, used SAS survival techniques to evade a huge armed police manhunt and continue on his murderous rampage through the North of England. Having learned from television reports that McGee was assisting the police, Prudom set a false trail leading away from the Johnson home, then headed back and hid in a makeshift shelter near Malton's tennis club, only 300 yards from the police station which was also the temporary headquarters co-ordinating the manhunt.

It is testament to the quality of the day that by its end the team successfully followed a trail that was nine hours old and had been subjected to heavy rain.

Upon leaving Johnson’s house, Prudom carefully laid out a false trail to confuse McGee and took refuge under a piece of plastic sheeting. This, sadly, can’t be said for the elderly couple who owned the next home Prudom crashed three days later. Britain’s largest-ever manhunt began on June 17, 1982, when PC David Haigh went to deliver a court summons to a poacher in North Yorkshire's Washburn Valley. The hunter and the hunted had one thing in common -- both had experience in Britain's elite Special Air Services commando unit.

Seconds later Barry Prudom, dubbed the Phantom of the Forest, was dead - after putting a bullet through his own head. Upon leaving school, Prudom managed to gain an apprenticeship as an electrician, and reportedly this was a role that he showed real promise and aptitude in, and could have had a successful career at. Thanks once again Perry, I thoroughly enjoyed working with you and hope to do so again in the not too distant future. Prudom gave Brian a gift of a United States Army paratrooper's ring, and then, believing the area was relatively safe, tied up the family and left the house at 03:15 on 4 July. During his years as a military soldier with the English Unique Powers, McGee’s way to turning into a gifted survivor started. While Eddie McGee’s precise date of death is obscure, reports and different sources propose that he died from malignant growth. That same day, PS David Winter followed leads about a suspicious man seen in a North Yorkshire village and Prudom shot him dead at point-blank range. After Prudom's death, it was revealed that he had previously attended survival courses run by McGee.

His subsequent travels abroad including a camping tour of the United States - would later be used in an effort to explain his final rampage as inspired by "overseas organizations," but the conspiracy theory will mat stand close examination. Born in Leeds in 1944, Prudom was the result of an illicit and short-lived affair between a dressmaker and a soldier. A good man who did not drink or smoke and would not visit the Sgt's Mess as he much to the annoyance of the RSM. All three cases involved brutal murders and a massive police manhunt; and all three are indelibly burned into the collective consciousness of North Yorkshire people.
