About this deal

However the shortfalls are redeemed by the strength of the central portrait of Grenvile and his relationship to Honor (in both senses). Both ruthless and charming, cold and passionate, bitter and vengeful while unremittingly loyal to the king and the monarchy, Grenvile towers over this book as a huge creation. We might not like him (and `like' is far too weak a word to use for him) but then neither does Honor, although she does love him to the end. And it is this ambiguity and complexity which gives the novel its strength. Jatinder Harchowal MBE FRPharmS, Chief Pharmacist, University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

I never thought I could enjoy a book about war and political strategy as much as I did enjoy this one. But, frankly, it's not her best work. It's a book written by an excellent writer when her real thoughts were elsewhere. Time heals all wounds, say the complacent, but I think it is not so much time that does it as determination of spirit. And the spirit can often turn to devil in the darkness." I came to The King's General (1946) as a confirmed Daphne du Maurier fan. No one spins a yarn quite as well as DDM.

Tip: It is recommended to only ever buy and improve Gold Historic Generals. How to get Evony Generals The King's General is well-paced, beautifully atmospheric, wonderfully mysterious, and capable of taking your breath away at times. I can think of only a handful of writers who evoke a setting as well as Daphne du Maurier―the Bronte sisters among them, who come to mind because there are many comparisons one could make between Richard Grenvile, Rochester, and Heathcliff. There are lots of places where the seventeenth century fades: Honor's courting in the orchard where she spends hours kissing Richard; her following him around like a camp woman - though, admittedly, there is a reference to how she has lost her reputation as a result though this isn't really spelt out till a rather melodramatic quarrel. Language, mindset, manners all reflect the early twentieth century rather than the seventeenth. The King's General is told by a character named Honor Harris, who is in love with Sir Richard Grenville, a Royalist general in the Civil War. In any given chapter, Honor Harris describes waiting for news of the war, worrying about her lover, the brief bursts of happiness when the war permits them to spend time together, and the deprivation and Spartan provisions of life during war time. These are undoubtedly topics Daphne Du Maurier was experiencing and thinking of in war-time Britain. An Assistant General cannot be sent on every activity that a Main General takes part in. The full list of activities that an Assistant can be sent on are outlined below:
