About this deal

Based heavily on the fashion of a single Doors tune, Quo found their rhythm, and the result was their biggest success to date.

GREAT DELUXE EDITION OF THIS CLASSIC QUO ALBUM FROM 1972, COMES IN A NICE 2 CD BOX SET WITH FANTASTIC LINER NOTES AND A BONUS DISC OF LIVE BBC AND JOHN PEEL RECORDINGS FROM BOTH 1972 AND 73, IM VERY PLEASED WITH THIS RELEASE, ALSO THE REMASTERING IS AWESOME TO!

The headline act was The Faces with performances also by the Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Striders, Lindisfarne and Chris Barber. RP: I like to imagine other bands going, “Look, I’ve come up with this song that goes dunk-du-dunk-du-dunk-du-dunk” and the other members going, “Well, we can’t do that because we’ll sound like Status Quo! This time with the line-up it will be gold, and I do not want it to go down to silver and then to bronze.

Denim-clad Francis Rossi’s lead vocals and Rick Parfitt’s harmonies presided over a mesh of guitars, with a sound that the band were to make their own. It was a massive so you could all play in it together and the sound wouldn’t smash your ears when you played hard. The two albums that preceded Piledriver, Ma Kelly’s Greasy Spoon and Dog Of Two Head, showed the glimmers of the band’s now-famous style, but Piledriver would be the first time that Status Quo boogied and shuffled their way into a trademark. It all kind of fell apart and of course the animosity crept in and Alan went to live in Australia and John disappeared somewhere.

The change was a drastic, but natural one as the line-up of Francis Rossi (guitar and vocals), Rick Parfitt (guitar and vocals), John Coghlan (drums) and Alan Lancaster (bass and vocals) moved remarkably in sync from one era to the next. The song, written by Rossi and Bob Young, became Quo’s third Top 10 hit, as Quo’s new army of fans latched onto this harder alternative to the glam-pop that was rising to power. I have a version that is exactly the same as this one but 'Printed and made by Howards Printers (Slough) Ltd. When they first got back together for gigs last year they were welcomed with sold out shows and grown men weeping with happiness, such is the lasting effect of the band’s 70s period. But with Piledriver we were playing that stuff live and when we went into the studio we were ready to go! London Paris Theatre - this gig was recorded by the BBC and pressed onto a transcription vinyl disc in limited quantities.

And we just did a completely different version of it than the Doors, much heavier and in the Quo style that we were just beginning to find. As we were travelling around all you ever heard on the radio was us - much to the disdain of the other bands on the tour - who kept on saying ”Oh no, not you lot again! Download the Qobuz apps for smartphones, tablets and computers, and listen to your purchases wherever you go. The second acoustic album suffers because the strongest songs were chosen for the first acoustic album. The Village Voice critic Robert Christgau asserted that the band had no decent singer or guitarist, and criticized their attempts at ballads and blues as "boring". The 1st press has "O Baby" on label (later pressings have "Oh Baby), The 1st press has NO sleeve printers mentioned on back sleeve (later pressings have also nothing or "Howards Printers (Slough) Ltd. The front cover showed a live shot of the band in their classic "heads down, no-nonsense boogie" mode. I really don't recommend anything but you could listen to Cross That Bridge and Burning Bridges for a bit of a laugh.
