About this deal

I think that the book is realistic because it was about the Romans and they liked to charriot race and also kept slaves to do things for them. The characters are really fun and they get in to lots of trouble, especially Scorcha as he seems really clumsy! I like Croakbag because he is funny and never stops talking about biscuits, and also is very interactive with the audience in different parts of the story. I don't know if children would get the humour behind some of the names, such as Putupon and Septacemia. The history is realistic but not all of it is because the Romans did chariot races but the boy wasn't real.

Samien: Romans on the Rampage is a fictional story but it is based on a real sport that was very popular in Ancient Rome, which is chariot racing. Some children have prompts to help, some summarise orally or reread the text with the teacher, some use bullet points, some use full sentences, some include quotations, some challenge themselves to summarise without looking in the book, some are given summary sentences and they must fill in the gaps. The book gives lots of factual information, including what it would be like to be rich or poor in ancient Rome. It was very hard to follow in some places as it jumped between scenes quite a lot and some of the words were very difficult to say and understand.

It was not my favourite Jeremy Strong book, because it’s not as funny as some of his other books (e. Croakbag the amazing talking raven tells the hilarious story of Perilus, the boy charioteer, his unpredictable family and Tiddles, the widdling elephant who's befriended them all. Your KS2 class will read the sentences taken from chapter 1 of ‘Romans on the Rampage’ insert and provide the reason for the use of each apostrophe.

Ella: I really enjoyed this book, because it was funny and it was told by a Raven who is best friends with perilus. Activities all have WALTs, smiley face stamper for pupil self assessment and traffic light stamper for quick marking. Often the story goes off topic for more humour which can be a bit irritating when there are page long tangents. My favourite part in the story was at the start when it told me about the boys dream to be a chariot racer. The aim of this new method is to expand pupils' vocabulary and deepen their understanding of the texts they are reading. This is something we will continue to improve and check as we consider the books used throughout the year in each year group. If you like Romans then take this book and read it but not too FAST …YOU DON’T WANT TO LOSE THE FUN!
