Here, Herron introduces a new slow horse, Ashley Khan, and further develops his subplot of Russian interference in the British establishment. A great story (along with other short stories) is about a couple who, by mistake, get into the wrong house and then go through a robbery attempt. From the troubled recruitment of a new MI5 informant to a botched information transfer, Herron’s novellas capture the drama, humor, and high stakes of everyday life in the world of spycraft, a world rife with both legends and secrets, where thrill-seeking and loneliness are ubiquitous and deadly, and where the lines between friends, enemies, and lovers are perpetually blurred by circumstance and subterfuge. If writing brilliant crime thrillers/mystery novels were painting, then Mike Herron would be Picasso. The Slough House series has been adapted for television under the name Slow Horses, starring Gary Oldman as Jackson Lamb, [3] with the first six-part season, based on the book Slow Horses, streamed on Apple TV+ from 1 April 2022.Jonas Worth and August Drummond, the protagonists of Beside the Syrian Sea and How to Betray Your Country, respectively, both found themselves at odds with their bureaucracies. Still placed within a familiar setting for author Mick Herron, this once again delves into the world of spies and the MI5. A Russian oligarch is visiting London and elements of The Park want to turn him because a potential future Russian president who owes British Intelligence would be a massive coupe. But Herron obviously relishes his digs at the many real-life shambles that have played out so garishly since, say, 2016.

This, like Real Tigers, is one of the more action-packed adventures in the series, and one where several earlier plot lines are resolved to move the bigger story forwards. Guess I will have to wait for Joe Country (suspecting that is the needed volume) to become available. There are 11 published books at the time of writing this article with the twelfth article scheduled for release in November 2022.His first book, Down Cemetery Road, was published in 2003, and has published more novels ever since. Out of a wickedly imagined version of MI5, [Herron] has spun works of diabolical plotting and high-spirited cynicism . He wants a tame intelligence service ready to do the PM’s bidding and leaks rumours that a government advisor has been subject to extraordinary rendition by an MI5 gone rogue. Nobody Walks is even set in the same espionage world as a retired spy digs in to his son’s mysterious death.

Supposedly turning up dead, the body of Zoe Boehm is apparently found and identified by her shocked friend Sarah Tucker.

The brilliant plotting of Herron’s twice CWA Dagger Award-winning Slough House series of spy novels is matched only by his storytelling gift and an ear for viciously funny political satire. Capturing the ambiance that came before, it offers much in the way of both suspense and intrigue, keeping the reader guessing all the way to the end. This was then broadened in scope though, as he began to feel more and more comfortable and confident with the genre. The question of whether he was a double agent must be resolved, and its answer may undo an entire career’s worth of spy secrets.
