There were insights and brief meetings with interesting people, but most just the everyday type, perhaps that is the attraction. But I was wondering if the book would continue in this vein, so I read on, then began scanning the pages to see if this would continue…and it did for the full year - from January 1 all the way through December 31. I was drawn to Fawn from the beginning, such a unique and interesting character - we don’t all want Goody Twoshoes!

The cover promises something akin to The Bookish Life of Nina Hill but it is most certainly not that and doesn't try to be.So here I go, at least for two towns: in Leuven, go to Barboek or Boekarest or Plato, and in Gent go to the fantastic Paard van Troje.

The diary entries would be inauthentic otherwise, for we all go through problems during our decades on the planet. Shaun Bythell takes us through a year of his life in 2015 as a second hand bookseller, a financially precarious business, in the small Scottish town of Wigtown. How many times have I had to come down the ladder to answer a question about the wifi password, or give directions to the restrooms? It is full of eccentric and quirky characters, not to mention the unforgettable Granny, home invasions and book festivals.Others have identified the year as 2015, but my edition either doesn't impart that information, or (more likely) I missed it! One of the most famous is Dracula, made up of letters, ship logs, telegrams, diary entries, doctor's notes, and newspaper clippings. I enjoy reading about feisty and cranky characters such as Olive Kitteridge but Fawn’s nasty disposition is simply unpleasant.

His prose has a languorous lilt to it which is in keeping; there are days where you get a sense of “I just can’t be bothered”. In this instalment, and I think we must now think of them as an ongoing series, there are three major differences. This is my opinion only and I am sure that Confessions of a Curious Bookseller will appeal to many readers. So, armed with skepticism and a sense of contrariness, I downloaded the Kindle sample, expecting to hate the book and the protagonist and be gratified in writing the whole thing off as mediocrity, but as is obvious, that did not happen. Made me wonder, we only know parts of the exchanges, and still form a solid image of the characters, develop love and hatred for them, how opinionated and judging we are!

only toward the end, after what should have been a personal tragedy , did she begin to see her childhood and her family in a different light. The title intrigued me, and the format was similar to Meg Cabot "The Boy Next Door" (which I loved). His home fills up with people during the festival, bits of the wall fall off the building and he has a few hangovers to cope with. The month-heading epigraphs are all from Augustus Muir’s The Intimate Thoughts of John Baxter, Bookseller this time. If I had to design the cover, I'd pick either a slightly sinister black-and-white gothic looking cover with a dilapidated Victorian building in the background, or alternatively a lurid one with a surrealist picture.
