About this deal

The new railway from Aberystwyth to Devil's Bridge". Lancashire Evening Post. British Newspaper Archive. 23 December 1902 . Retrieved 17 September 2016– via British Newspaper Archive. The Rheidol Valley or 'Cwm Rheidol' is a good choice for a touring day out, featuring typically Welsh scenery, some unexpected attractions such as major hydro-electric power station and a chance for activities such as fishing and cycling

From 30 May 2023, Hywel Dda University Health Board patients will be able to receive outpatient physiotherapy clinics on the ground floor of the Canolfan Rheidol building in Aberystwyth. The Rheidol rises in the headwaters of the Nant-y-moch Reservoir ( 52°27′32″N 3°50′06″W / 52.4590°N 3.8349°W / 52.4590; -3.8349 ( River Rheidol (source))) on the western flanks of Plynlimon, near the sources of the Wye and Severn. After flowing south to Ponterwyd in the increasingly deep valley, then southwest through Welsh Oak ancient woodland, it veers westwards to its confluence with the Afon Mynach, at Devil's Bridge, Ceredigion ( Welsh: Pontarfynach, lit. "bridge on the Mynach"), and a spectacular waterfall. The river continues, passing the abandoned workings of the Cwm Rheidol lead mine; one of many other metal mines in the valley–a source of extracted metal pollution of the river– and flows westwards before reaching its confluence with the Afon Ystwyth and the estuary at Aberystwyth to drain into Cardigan Bay. ( 52°24′26″N 4°05′23″W / 52.4071°N 4.0898°W / 52.4071; -4.0898 ( River Rheidol (mouth))) For many centuries the economy of the Rheidol valley had been based on metal mining. This has now been replaced by forestry, tourism and the farming of beef, dairy cattle and sheep. Alison Shakeshaft, Executive Director of Therapies and Health Science for Hywel Dda University Health Board, said: “This is an exciting opportunity to enable the health board to bring clinical services closer to home for residents in the north of Ceredigion, complementing the health board’s strategic vision to bring services closer to local communities and to support them to live active, healthy lives. Look out for birds of prey such as red kites and buzzards soaring high above the valley floor and listen to the sound of the narrow gauge steam engine working hard on the climb into the hills.

Don't Miss

One of the best ways to visit Devil’s Bridge is to travel on the narrow-gauge Vale of Rheidol Railway which runs between Aberystwyth and Devil’s Bridge. Originally intended to transport metal ore from the mines and timber from the forest plantations of the Cambrian Mountains. As the railway makes its way up the valley, the lakes and meanders of the lower river give way to steep wooded slopes. You'll spot a shape, known locally as 'the stag', coloured with the mineral in the mine spoil. It is an unusual scheduled ancient monument and one of only two of its kind in the UK. On 1 January 1922, as part of the Cambrian Railways the line was grouped into the Great Western Railway (GWR). [12] A new station opened next to main standard gauge station in Aberystwyth. [6] The GWR invested quite significantly in its new asset, overhauling one of the two Davies & Metcalfe locomotives and building two brand new locomotives at Swindon, which arrived in 1923. Works records appear to show that the GWR carried out heavy repairs to the original Prince of Wales whereas in reality the locomotive was scrapped and a brand new locomotive built to replace it. [13] Rheidol was withdrawn from traffic in 1924. [14] New open carriages were built to replace the home-made examples used by the VoR and Cambrian, and in 1938 the closed carriages were entirely replaced by high quality modern replacements, all of which are still in service today.

Aberystwyth is served by Traws Cymru T1, T1C, T2 and T5 busses. Arriva and Lloyd's Coaches also operate local bus services. The Rheidol power plant is the largest of its kind in England and Wales and has generated renewable energy since 1962.The 11.75 mile journey takes approximately one hour in each direction. Listen to the sound of a powerful narrow-gauge steam locomotive working to climb up 700ft (200m) from Aberystwyth to Devil's Bridge. Johnson, Peter (2011). An Illustrated History of the Great Western Narrow Gauge. OPC. ISBN 978-0-86093-636-7. Between Devil's Bridge and Aberystwyth runs a narrow-gauge steam railway, the Vale of Rheidol Railway. This was originally built to ship metal ore from the mines, but now provides a very popular tourist route to the top end of the Rheidol valley. Rheidol Power Station is situated in the beautiful Cwm Rheidol valley 8 miles from Aberystwyth in Mid-Wales. Since 1962 the plant has generated renewable energy using rainwater that falls on the surrounding mountains and is the largest of its kind in England and Wales.
