Like the first movement, the scherzo is in D minor, with the introduction bearing a passing resemblance to the opening theme of the first movement, a pattern also found in the Hammerklavier piano sonata, written a few years earlier. At times during the piece, Beethoven specifies one downbeat every three bars—perhaps because of the fast tempo—with the direction ritmo di tre battute (rhythm of three beats) and one beat every four bars with the direction ritmo di quattro battute (rhythm of four beats). Normally, a scherzo is in triple time. Beethoven wrote this piece in triple time but punctuated it in a way that, when coupled with the tempo, makes it sound as if it is in quadruple time. Cooke observed the difficulty in reviewing Inside No. 9 as a whole due to the fact that each episode is different from the last. [110] "Sardines" was commended for its cast and acting, [41] [117] [118] [119] as well as the scripting, [117] [118] but critics had a mixed response to the twist ending. [12] [24] [118] [119] "A Quiet Night In" was a change in approach, relying on physical comedy, [120] but it was well received as funny, [106] [121] and inventive. [106] [122] "Tom & Gerri" was less comedic but darker than previous episodes; [123] [124] [125] critics commended the plot, [126] [127] but disagreed about the portrayal of mental illness in the episode. [123] [126] Less horrific than other episodes in the series, [11] "Last Gasp" dealt with themes of celebrity culture and fandom, [128] [129] [130] and was considered a weaker instalment. [128] [131] [132] Critics called "The Understudy" a "return to form". [133] [134] [135] While it was based upon Macbeth, a knowledge of the play was not necessary for enjoyment, [133] [136] and the plot's divergence from the play was praised. [137] [138] [139] "The Harrowing" was the most horrific episode of the series, [11] [140] [141] and was considered genuinely scary by critics. [7] [11] [40] [142]
