The series will premiere on YouTube this summer. Maaya Uchida will play the master and world's sole survivor, and Mutsumi Tamura will play Haru the dog. A lot of the jokes are aimed at a Japanese audience and as such there are references to Japanese folk tales and traditional beliefs that a an unfamiliar viewer might struggle to understand, but the show uses its visuals and the pair's commentary to provide enough context for it to make sense. Each episode is extremely short and consists of multiple skits, so a joke never overstays its welcome, though because of this, it's sometimes too fast for a skit to be fully developed.As a pet-owner who has always felt that one of the greatest joys experienced in life is the profound connection between a dog and its owner, Yu Ishihara's “ Doomsday With My Dog” is a title I approached with optimistic caution. This relationship, though universally felt, is not always expressed in a similar way and the promise of dog-centric antics that push beyond just being ‘cute' is more difficult to find than one may think. Furthermore, the book takes the segmented comic strip approach that, while having recurring characters and themes, act as separate stories unto themselves, telling the story in a non-traditional narraitve.

A still, clearly hand-drawn frame stays on screen for several seconds, with perhaps only the mouth moving, and massive speech bubbles with huge text inside them. It makes the show feel very static and doesn't lend itself to immersion, as the text takes up a good 25-75% of the screen most of the time. It's hard to tell where the main cast actually is, but usually that doesn't matter, since the focus is on the dialogue, not the setting. I generally don't enjoy vignette-style, plot-less manga like this, but skimming to the end there was a more serious-feeling chapter of an alternate universe (OR WAS IT???) of what might have happened between the girl & the dog if the world hadn't ended, and that was good enough to get me a little choked up. A girl and her dog navigate a post-apocalyptic Japan, encountering a variety of animals and creatures--both real and supernatural--and ruminating on a variety of topics from philosophy to fables to pop culture. The graphic novel is not a linear story as much as it is a series of little vignettes. Doomsday With My Dog's first volume is, by and large, fun. That bonus chapter is a blow (although very well done), but generally its breezy approach to post-apocalyptic adventure fiction sets it apart in a positive way. After all, who better to travel with than your fuzzy best friend?All mankind has been wiped out, except for one 17-year-old Japanese girl. But that’s okay! Her Shiba Inu Haru remains as her loyal companion. Together, they traverse the ruins of civilization, encountering aliens, fox spirits, and other fantastic creatures along the way! Illustrations are rendered in full color. The quality of the drawings are top-notch all around. The dogs especially are adorable, and Ishihara-sensei does an excellent job conveying their emotions. If you are a dog person, and especially if you like the Shiba Inu breed, you’ll probably fall in love with Haru. That aside, this is a joyously bizarre story of a high school girl and her dog roaming Japan after the end of humanity. Dogs talk, aliens have landed and become farmers, and mythological beings are emerging from folklore. It's full-color, four-panel weirdness, and there's something really engaging about that. Ishihara deliberately fudges the big details. Why can the girl understand all of the animals? How did the world end and why did she survive? Who knows! As you may expect, there isn't particularly any outstanding character development, but the characters are still enjoyable to watch. The interaction between the leads are a joy to read; the main girl's cynical and down-to-earth personality as well as Haru-san's overly-philosophical and loving personality makes for a great and fairly humorous relationship. There are a few other recurring characters, like other dog breeds and yokai. They aren't particularly deep, but still fairly interesting. Also, nothing wrong with cute doggos. Finally, the occasional hints at the main girl's personality and her past are a very nice contribution to both her character and to her relationship with Haru-san.

Haru, the other half of this comedy duo, is the quintessential loyal canine. Despite his master’s many faults, he’s utterly devoted to her. Most of the series’ philosophizing stems from Haru, so he comes off as the smarter of the two. Even so, he definitely retains canine impulses, such as the urge to flee from baths. At heart, Doomsday with my Dog is a comedy show. Initially I was drawn in by its name and the prospect of venturing through the remains of a destroyed world much like in Girls' Last Tour, but the show places much more emphasis on the day-to-day ramblings of the main cast, which ends up creating a much more light-hearted atmosphere than one might expect. tsukkomi respectively, with Haru often making puns, begging for food, or simply being a lovable goofball. The girl is more level-headed and provides the metaphorical hammer that hits Haru over the head when he goes too far. A cast of side characters pop up here and there - more dogs, for example - but there are never any humans for obvious reasons. Additionally, these humorous vignettes are often interrupted with insightful or heartfelt kernels of wisdom on the human condition. Extras include the bonus story “Ten Years Later with You,” translation notes, afterword, and illustrations printed on the inside cover. That said, I can understand how some people might feel like the ending is too ham-handed. I appreciated the mystery of the narrative and the vague setting. I didn’t need any help in interpreting the tale—or, really, I didn’t want it. I liked his master alright. She wasn't my favorite, but can't quite put my finger on why. However, I LOVED the aliens! They were definitely my favorite part of this first volume and would totally love to see more of them! I also liked the variety of dogs that our main characters crossed paths with. I didn't expect there to be so many dogs in post-apocalyptic times! LOL!

to stay together, no matter what challenges come their way and the uses of funny segments on what happens along the journey through a post-apocalyptic world. On the plus side, there are lots of super-cute doggos and Master does cosplay poses for the chapter breaks. And a bonus story at the end breaks out of the gag-a-day mode and actually tells an affecting story that really spotlights how good the art is, making me wish the whole book had been told in this manner. I did enjoy the way the story is told with double four-panel "comics" because it seems rare for manga to be told in that format through an entire volume. Haru is also SO cute! It was fun following a dog as more of the main character than the human. He's definitely pretty smart for a dog! Sometimes I was like, "whoa!
