Thus concludes the epic Mark Waid era on Daredevil! VIII) All-New All-Different Daredevil by Charles Soule a b Cronin, Brian (April 24, 2019). And I Must Scream: The ultimate fate of Bullseye in #27. After a demonically possessed Daredevil killed Bullseye in Shadowland, Lady Bullseye manages to resurrect him, but he's completely paralyzed, has lost all his senses except his eyesight, and needs to be placed in an iron lung. Bullseye comes up with a rather elaborate plot to torment Daredevil and ultimately kill him. He fails and in the process loses his sense of sight. One of the most vicious, psychotic, and frightening villains in the Marvel Universe is now, in the words of Daredevil, "a living brain in a flesh and bone coffin." Still, it's a pretty darn good start for a character that I wasn't all that fond of in the beginning. I'm fascinated by the MacGuffin that Waid introduces at the end of this book, an having seen it show up in Punisher vol. 2 I know it'll linger for a while yet - making it a great plot device to carry this run to an elevated mystique beyond the day-to-day DD fun we're getting. Daredevil: Redemption #1–6 (April–Aug. 2005; no cover dates; #1-2 both indicia-dated April 2005) by David Hine and Michael Gaydos On April 9, 2019, Marvel announced that Waid would write a five-issue miniseries featuring the Invisible Woman, her first solo series since her debut in 1961. [62] 2020s [ edit ]This series continues to be a thrilling, fast-paced, lighthearted take on Daredevil, though this volume sees the quality of the writing falling off a tad. I'm starting to get the sense that Mark Waid doesn't really nail the intricate plotting required of conspiracy storylines, and as such both of the major plots in this book suffer a little bit (particularly the first half). Lighter and Softer: Mark Waid accepted the offer to write Daredevil on the condition that he could move the series away from the overwhelming bleakness that had dominated the character for the better part of thirty years. Surprisingly, the results have been rather successful. Silly Rabbit, Cynicism Is for Losers!: In issue #11, Matt encounters a female protégé of the Punisher (who lost her fiancé) and tries to sympathize with her by bringing up heroes who also lost loved ones. However, when she says that nobody can be as driven as her and Matt without a tragedy, he ultimately throws his billy club at her face, and gives a speech stating that the idea that you need a tragic event to fight for justice is ludicrous. Waid does make a couple of questionable decisions that I felt were missteps. He takes Matt and Foggy from the courtroom and puts them in their office, coaching people who can’t afford their counsel to represent themselves in court. So while the defendants are in court, Matt and Foggy are sat in an office waiting for the phone to ring with the verdict. While morally admirable, I felt it detracted from a key image of the character, of Matt standing in court looking like the real life version of the statue of justice. Removing him from that setting feels wrong.

But, problems with the first half of the book aside, I found the second half to be much, much better. Daredevil uncovers a vast conspiracy by a group known as the Sons of the Serpent (who are basically the Klan) to infiltrate government agencies and spread their message of white nationalism and hate throughout these institutions. In light of recent events, this actually feels even more relevant than it likely did at the time of publication. However, I couldn't help but feel like the real-life advancement of white nationalism is much scarier and harder to fight than the one represented here, which seems to assume that if the American people only KNEW about the racists in government they would stop them, whereas in real life that doesn't seem to be the case. Open Secret: As of Mark Waid's run, virtually everyone suspects Matt is Daredevil — forcing him to play the bumbling blind man in an attempt to throw people off his scent. It hasn't been working too well, and Matt's career is in danger. Daredevil by Chip Zdarsky Volume 2: No Devils, Only God Chip Zdarsky, Lalit Kumar Sharma, Jorge Fornes Cowsill "2000s" in Dolan, p. 310: "Superman's post- Crisis on Infinite Earths origin had remained lore since John Byrne's seminal Man of Steel series in 1986, but by 2003 it was time for an update."

The final panel of this issue was pretty chilling. I like how Waid and company are going out of their way to show how hard it is to get around without sight, even with super powers. a b Brooke, David (April 18, 2022). This is not the first time Punisher and Daredevil have crossed paths, but for my money, it is the definitive event. The first time on paper we see the lengths to which they’ll go… and just how much Frank respects Matt. This brief encounter sets up at least three future arcs — entire storylines — for Daredevil comics and should be considered essential reading.

Take That, Audience!: When the Punisher's new apprentice is cornered by Hornhead, she gives a small rant about how the only people who are actually serious about being heroes are those who've suffered tragedy. DD chews her out and gives a long rant about how he finds this line of thinking disgusting as, while he himself has suffered tragedy (in fact, probably more tragedy than any other character in comics), he finds the idea that doctors, police officers, fire fighters, and heroes who are heroes because they want to do good are somehow not as heroic as he is just plain disrespectful and appalling to think. It's almost definitely an Author Filibuster aimed at fans who think that the only interesting heroes are the Darker and Edgier, angsty, miserable sort, which is a line of thinking that Mark Waid is well-known for hating with a passion, but the speech is still pretty awesome and befitting Daredevil's character. In 1992 Waid began the assignment which would bring him to wider recognition in the comics industry, when he was hired to write The Flash by editor Brian Augustyn. Waid stayed on the title for an eight-year run. [6] He wrote a Metamorpho limited series in 1993 [10] and created the character known as Impulse in The Flash (vol. 2) #92 (July 1994). [11] Impulse was launched into his own series in April 1995 by Waid and artist Humberto Ramos. [12] In November of that same year, Waid and Howard Porter collaborated on the Underworld Unleashed limited series, which served as the center of a company-wide crossover storyline.
