Or why would parents do it to their own children?. I think it would be certainly more disturbing but extremely interesting. And on a last note, this book shows how social services breaks down and some of the problems involved with these "so-called" social workers. Cathy does make excuses for some of them but in my opinion there is no room for error when we are talking about the safety and well-being of chldren. Jodies social worker in the book SHOULD not only be fired from her position but prohibited from working with children ever again. It's people like her that allowed this little girls life to be ruined when they could of saved her when she was first put on the "at risk" list. What is wrong with these people? How could anyone turn a blind eye to such a situation, I just don't understand that. Makes me very sad. This typically only happens with older books, but it happens to the older books on my shelves quite often. I have a baggy full of spines just waiting to be reattached to their books. I'm pretty sure if I had not been reading this in my classroom amongst my students during silent reading time, I would have been bawling my eyes out from the way the book ended (not the "Progress" epilogue, but the last bit of the last chapter). You'll see! All of the books that I restore are repaired sympathetically. I re-use as much as possible of the original binding and always try to retain a book’s aesthetic feel. The reason(s) are so horrible that I had to stop reading and just take some time to digest what I just read. There were some parts that I had to literally re-read to see if I read it correctly. The importance that love, harmony and boundaries have in a child's life and how sometimes, in delicate situations, it isn't enough.

Repair to damaged books

Writing was so-so... I think that there are better stories of the realities of being a foster parent. This felt more like "LOOK AT ALL THESE TERRIBLE THINGS! LOOK HOW BAD THE SYSTEM IS! LOOK HOW DAMAGED THESE CHILDREN ARE!"

Two great warriors, joined by hand, to spread destruction across the land. In Zamorak's name, now two are one. The extent of the damage done to Jodie is explained all throughout the book as she lives with Cathy. Cathy is an incredible human being to take on such damaged children and the way she wrote about each incident and moment made me feel as though I were part of the case as well. Although, at times, I felt like pulling out the way many of her carers and social workers have in the past.

It becomes clear that the Social Services are not seeing what should have been obvious signs. Now, Jodie lost her childhood and her development may be forever compromised. The first person narrator of the novel is an unnamed medical doctor turned politician (called Dr Stephen Fleming in the Louis Malle film) whose promotion from Member of Parliament (MP) to cabinet member is imminent. Just then the MP is casually introduced to his grown-up son's enigmatic girlfriend Anna and helplessly falls for her. For as long as it lasts, Martyn, his son, has no idea that his father is having an extramarital affair with his girlfriend (and later fiancée), and Anna does not seem to mind being a young man's partner and simultaneously his father's lover and object of desire. The MP enjoys a brief period of sexual bliss, meeting Anna in various European cities and having sex with her in unlikely places. Eventually, he buys them a small flat in central London where they meet on a regular basis. Though not eloquent, Glass's writing is sensitive and solid. The sheer depth of the experience is the crown of this book. I couldn't put it down. I was desperate to read Glass's conclusion, for better or worse.
