Starlight then informs him that she has since learned that the Deep has lied about his importance to the group, and he is, in fact, regarded as "a joke." She further threatens to burn his eyes out if he so much as touches her again. The Deep is visibly shaken by her threats, but tries to maintain a calm facade. From the acclaimed author of The Hunger comes an eerie, psychological twist on one of the world’s most renowned tragedies, the sinking of the Titanic, and the ill-fated sail of its sister ship, the Britannic.Someone, or some thing, is haunting the ship. That is the only way to explain the series of misfortunes that have plagued the passengers of the Titanic from the moment they set sail. From mysterious disappearances to sudden deaths, the guests aboard the ship are suspended in an eerie, unsettling twilight zone of travel, with little sense of time during the four days of the boat’s illustrious maiden voyage. As the guests acquaint themselves and shrug off strange occurrences, several, including maid Annie Hebbley, guest Mark Fletcher, and millionaires Madeleine Astor and Benjamin Guggenheim, are convinced there’s something more sinister going on–that is, until disaster strikes.

In The Troop, Cutter managed to get us invested in the fate of the boys trapped on that island. They were kind, smart, scrappy, selfish, brave and even evil in one case. When horrible things happened to them, we cared and felt terrible for them. In that way, The Troop was very Stephen King-like for me. There is something wrong going on with the people of earth. They are losing their memories. His older brother, who is a genius, is working on trying to help solve the problem. John Carpenter's The Thing is sacred ground. The scene with the disembodied hand that had an arachnid-like appearance was straight out of the movie. Not a tribute. Just a repeat. I was more offended than disappointed. Like THE HUNGER, THE DEEP is historical reimagining laced with magic and mystery. Alma Katsu adds a sweeping love story and a ghostly tale of revenge to the sinkings of RMS Titanic and HMHS Britannic to tell a tale that is haunting, thrilling, and utterly original.”Superhuman Durability: The Deep has shown the ability to withstand greater force against his body than that of normal human beings without experiencing physical harm. He was able leap off a giant boat into the water and survive unscathed. He has also claimed to have swam in the Mariana Trench, which has a water pressure in excess of 8 tons per square inch, or 1,000 times the standard atmospheric pressure at sea level, on the ocean floor. [6] Unfortunately, The Deep barely has characters much less ones I cared about when the horrible things happened to them. In fact, the book only has one character that we ever really get to know -- Luke -- and he isn't terribly interesting or memorable or clever. Since the history of the wajinru is too painful for them to bear, but the thought of forgetting is even more impossible, they appoint one member of their species to carry the memories for everyone. Every year, the historian must deliver the history to their people, allowing them to process the lessons and value of the memories before becoming blissfully unaware once more. Before I begin my review of this novel, there are many trigger warnings I found while reading that I wanted to let everyone know about. They are…

This one had quite a bit more. If you are like me and sensitive at all to that type of content, tread with caution. The Deep was on the short list for the British Fantasy Award in the Best Novella category, though it did not win. [12] [13] Deep in the Marianas Trench, in the Pacific Ocean, an unknown substance hailed as “ambrosia” has been discovered—a universal healer, from initial reports. Just in time as the world is being ravaged by a plague called 'Gets. We find ourselves in a special research lab eight miles under the sea, after a strange transmission is sent out and has been radio dark since. Luke and a few of his crew are sent below the depths to find out what happened to the other crew and preserve research. Luke will find out the former crew has tapped into something not of this world. I really wanted to love this book. I found it dragged for me between discoveries. It would have been better if it had a faster pace and more terror. It was an okay read, but nothing special.

The last name "Moskowitz" indicates possible Eastern Ashkenazic Jewish descent. This is further established in the fact that the Deep starred in a Hanukkah film titled Light the Menorah. Cutter reels you in slowly, a bit at a time, you manage to swallow some pretty foul tasting medicine but you keep going, venturing forward-- and then, when you're nice and hooked in the lip-he rips you the rest of the way through the book! Having been abandoned by their Historian, the wajinru beneath the surface are slowly being driven mad by the burden of their people's traumatic memories. Their madness is creating a storm like the one that previously engulfed the surface world. Yetu must decide whether or not to return, saving both her people and the surface-dwellers like Oori, at the cost of retaking the burden of her people's memories. THE DEEP deftly mashes up spellbinding historical fiction, adroit commentary on class and gender, and a classic yet surprising ghost story. Annie’s tale is truly haunting .”

And so it is that Luke, a veterinarian, finds himself teamed with Lieutenant Commander Alice Sykes who is the pilot of the submarine that is going to take them down to the trench where the Trieste is. During his tenure with The Seven, The Deep seemed mindful of the fact that he was regarded as the least valuable member. He complained to Starlight that Vought only wants him to make "pretty dives" and show off his biceps. He also became belligerent when Starlight, having learned that The Deep lied to her about his importance to the group to coerce her into sexual acts, angrily told him "everyone thinks you're a joke." Over the years, The Deep became good friends with fellow heroes such as Lamplighter, another member of The Seven, but received habitually verbal abuse and hazing from other heroes such as Homelander and A-Train, due to their sense of superiority to both him and his powers. Following Lamplighters retirement from hero work, The Deep was chosen to host the debut of The Seven’s newest member and Lamplighter’s replacement, Starlight. This did have some genuine moments of horror that were well written, gross, and enjoyable so I'm bumping this one up to 1.5 stars. A new substance, believed to be a miraculous cure-all healer, is discovered at the bottom of the Challenger Deep, the lowest known point in the ocean. It isn't long before a state of the art research center, populated with a select few brilliant scientists, is constructed eight miles below sea level.

Kevin Moskowitz was born in the mid 80s and, like all superheroes, was experimented on at birth by Vought International with Compound V. Kevin first became aware of his aquatic telepathy at nine years of age, as he began hearing the thoughts of every aquatic animal he encountered, whether at a pet store, aquarium, beach, or Red Lobster. At first, he believed was going insane; however, his mother deceived him, calling it a gift and that he was just born that way. Over time his body would continue to mutate, sprouting aquatic gills on his torso, a trait that Kevin was highly insecure about as he believed himself to be ugly and afraid that people would reject him. At some point, Kevin attended and graduated from Godolkin University and was ranked number six. They all of them, harbour their own fears and insecurities. Add enough paranormal elements to further exploit this emotional turmoil and the results are:

It became a recurring theme that took me out of the reading experience a bit. It would have been better to perhaps focus a bit more on all the underwater horror and not all the other things for it to be a tighter read. Focusing more on that and on the ‘Gets would have been ideal, especially since that aspect of the novel got a bit lost from the halfway point on. Luke, our protagonist, has a genius brother, Clayton, who is currently conducting research for a possible cure eight miles beneath the surface of the Pacific, down deep in Marianas Trench. The problem is that the scientists stationed in the underwater research lab called the Trieste have been incommunicado and now one of them has surfaced in a not so pretty state. The last communication that the on surface team received came from Clayton, urging his brother Luke to come on down. The Deep is mostly a parody of DC's Aquaman but his personality is similar to Marvel's Namor the Sub-Mariner. the only disappointment i had with this book is that we didn't get more about the 'gets - the plague that inspires the whole undersea research situation in the first place. because that's what fascinated me from the beginning - the symptoms of the plague that had me rapid-fire self-diagnosing: It looks and breathes as though it is dreamlike and delusory and deceitful. It plays with your mind.
