About this deal

The most striking characteristic of this lens compared to the great number of 70-200 zooms is its price: at least 30 % less than most comparable offerings (70-200 with constant aperture 2.8). Despite its reasonable price, this lens is very good. Comes with a very nice semi-soft lens-case that is well padded, the lens-shade plus a special APS-C extender is included, reversible for transport, and the lens-caps finally resemble the standard Nikons and can be mounted in any of three orientations. [+] Still, the AF consistency on the wide end, especially at close distances, is occasionally not so great and that makes calibration more challenging. Testing the lens under ideal conditions, using an ultra-high resolution Canon EOS 5Ds R, most of my 70mm images were sharp at 1/6 second exposures and about half were sharp at 1/5 second with a strong taper off in keeper rate at longer exposures. As usual I’ll have a look at the technical data first. I’ve rated the features with a [+] (or [++]), when it’s better than average or even state of the art, a [0] if it’s standard or just average, and [-] if there’s a disadvantage. To give you a better insight as to how this lens compares to its competitor from Nikon I’ve supplied data for the Nikon AF-S 70-200/2.8G VR II too, denoted here just as the “Nikon” for short.

Manual focus is also possible, as is Manual Override (MO). With this latter feature, the user is able to continue using autofocus as normal, before making any final manual adjustments using the focusing ring around the lens. This is particularly useful when capturing moving subjects, which may move slightly just prior to capture. Portrait subjects can range from infants to seniors, from individuals to large groups (if enough working distance is available). is heavier (63.5 vs. 53.0 oz, 1800 vs. 1500g w/ tripod ring), has a larger diameter (3.71 vs. 3.48", 94.2 vs. 88.5mm), takes larger filters (82mm vs. 77mm) and features slightly shorter focus and zoom ring rotations. You'll want to stop down to f/4 when zoomed all the way in if the light allows it. That will improve the overall score to 2,500 lines, but you'll still have to deal with fuzzy 1,355-line edges. The overall sharpness is better at f/5.6 (2,895 lines), but edges only sharpen by about 100 lines. You'll need to set the lens to a narrow aperture for the best performance—it's great at f/8 (3,211 lines average, 2,103 lines at the edges) and at f/11 (3,370 lines average, 2,614 lines at the edges). Looking at the Sigma 70-200 Sports vs. Canon 70-200L IS III specs comparison, we find that the Sigma lens has more aperture blades (11 vs. 8), is larger,Against the Canon 70-200mm f/4L USM, the Sigma does pretty well, particularly starting at the f/4 aperture they both share. In other parameters, they compare pretty closely, and are pretty close in price as well, the Canon actually being a bit cheaper. Between the two, if you're on a Canon platform and don't need the f/2.8 speed of this Sigma, the Canon is a better deal. (If you do need the f/2.8 though, the Sigma delivers quite nicely, at only a modest increase in price. Defocused areas within images look beautifully smooth and creamy. And the quality of bokeh holds up well when stopping down a little, helped by an extremely well-rounded aperture based on 11 diaphragm blades. The F2.8 zoom lenses are the essential equipment for many professional photographers. 70-200mm F2.8 lenses in particular are expected to perform at their best in various challenging scenes, from news to sports, landscape, and portraits. While non-cinema lenses are generally not parfocal and that attribute can be individual lens-specific, the review lens is not parfocal. The lens is able to focus as close as 3.9 feet (1.2-meter). The new multi layer lens coating and lens design reduce flare and ghost, which is a common problem with digital cameras and also creates an optimum color balance through the entire zoom range. Those using this lens on mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras (MILCs) and those autofocusing using DSLRs' sensor-based AF systems should experience stellar AF accuracy. There's about 1 percent pincushion distortion at 140mm, and the lens shows its sharpest results at f/2.8—3,003 lines using the center-weighted metric with edges that fall just shy of 2,700 lines. A lens of this size and weight creates a significantly-front-heavy situation for a tripod-mounted camera.It seems that the button on the bottom (hard to reach) should have been moved to the right side where it would be positioned on top when shooting vertically (especially with a battery grip in use). those capturing portraits or photographing low light events, including sporting events, definitely will.
