About this deal

Sometime after his death, Dennis’s sons and daughters decided to return the fossils to Brixham and allowed the museum to research the specimens and place them on display alongside a stone axe head collected by museum volunteer Graham Head during his exploration of Ash Hole Cavern in the 1960s.

The lost Bench Bone Cavern of Brixham contained the remains of Hyena, Woolly Mammoth and Neanderthal man - now on display in Torquay Museum. It is one of four bone caves of Torbay researched by Victorian scientist William Pengelly, described by some as one of the earliest fathers of archaeology. Readymoney Cove, near the mouth of the River Fowey and looking out over the Fowey Estuary, is a pretty, sheltered cove with a sandy beach that largely disappears at high tide. The cove is watched over by St Catherine's Castle, which was probably built by local landowners, the Rashleigh family. Behind the sandy beach at Readymoney Cove is the cottage Daphne DuMaurier rented when she moved to Fowey from London. There is a car park five minutes walk from the beach.

Due to liability insurance you will have to be a member of the Cavern Cove Competitive Shooting range to use the range outside of your normal competition day.

Next to the passage towards the chest with the slippery armor, there's a dirt mound which contains ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Cavers should be able to show proof that they are registered and complying with rules & regulations. Speaking at the time to DevonLive, he said: "The cave is still visible and walled off. It's fantastic. Inside it there will be evidence entombed of Cavemen and huge, wild ice age mammals living and occupying the area around Brixham Harbour. The water flows underground now, but then, the ground was permanently frozen and so the glacial meltwater had to run over the top. The result was that a massive waterfall once thundered over the Cove. Allow at least two to four hours to tour Cades Cove, longer if you walk some of the area's trails. Traffic is heavy during the tourist season in summer and fall and on weekends year-round. While driving the loop road, please be courteous to other visitors and use pullouts when stopping to enjoy the scenery or view wildlife. The valley has a rich history. For hundreds of years, Cherokee Indians hunted in Cades Cove but archeologists have found no evidence of major settlements. The first Europeans settled in the cove sometime between 1818 and 1821. By 1830, the population of the area had already swelled to 271. Cades Cove offers the widest variety of historic buildings of any area in the national park.

During the Victorian era, Brixham’s three fossil bone caves — Windmill Hill, Ash Hole and Bench caverns — and Kents Cavern in Torquay attracted much scientific interest. The caves were largely forgotten, especially since the once-popular show cave, Windmill Hill Cavern, closed in 1977. They were also overshadowed by the size and fame of Kents Cavern. Yet all the time we hear these two terms defining a huge difference in scuba diving. Cave Diving is immediately perceived as hardcore and one of the deadliest recreational activities on the planet. Whereas Cavern Diving is offered as a specialty course by PADI and easily obtainable by any Advanced Open Water certified diver over the age of 18. Cave Diving This is one of the Brixham bone caves that William Pengelly researched in 1875 and was said to have been quarried away but when I went to look I found that there is some of it still there.

There you have it. When asking ‘What is the difference between a cave and a cavern’ we really need to consider the context this question is asked in. There is a geological difference that has little effect in scuba diving. However, this classification in the diving world between a cave and a cavern makes a massive difference. Pengelly was as controversial in Victorian times as Darwin - together their work went against the bible teachings. A spotted hyena jaw and spear head from the cave were found in the cave in 1885 and carbon dated to 37,500 years old. The jaw was found above the spear - proving that man lived before the Spotted Hyena. You can reach The Festering Cove by a jump from the above location (X:70, Y:-239), next to the mushroom portals from Auntie Ethel's lair. Be careful of the exploding mushroom, you can shoot it before jumping. You must be registered to shoot 60 days prior to the shooting date or your camping spot will be released.
