About this deal

Solid core wire isn’t easy to deal with in situations where you’ll need to go around curves like around car seats or tight spaces. How much wire do you need? If you catch the wire inside by squeezing a stripper too hard you’ll likely break off of the wire strands. I do that sometimes for wire terminal strips because they can also be a pain to keep wire in place when tightening it down. A bonus of doing it that way is that it won’t oxidize like normal exposed speaker wire conductors do over timne. Using a typical and reasonable example, we can use 16AWG stranded copper wire with 19 strands of 29AWG wire (“19/29”). Resistance per meter is rated at 0.0147Ω/m. [1] You may have heard of the skin effect in some conductors which becomes more of an issue at higher frequencies but that’s well above the 20 to 20kHz audio range so it’s not something to worry about. Using the amperage from (2.), calculate losses across 4 meters of 16AWG stranded wire at maximum power (maximum current): Be sure to try to take curves & bends into account but don’t worry about getting it exactly right. Measure the distance and then add a few feet (an extra 2 feet or so is good) to account for curves and other little things that add up. Long (100ft+) speaker runs or higher power applications such as high-power 2 or 4 ohm subwoofers with a short length. Loosen the set screw or threaded body as provided. For side opening use, don’t remove it fully. If you’re inserting wire through the center hole you can remove it if you like. Tighten firmly and tug the wire slightly to be sure it’s secure. How to make RCA cable speaker wiring connectionsYou raise a great point, Rodney, so thanks for the comment. I’ll need to mention something about using that type of wire outdoors and for marine use for that reason. Set screw type: these have a set screw that is loosened to allow inserting the speaker wire and then tightened to hold it in place inside a metal barrel. Not all speaker wires are the same, and if you’re installing a professional-level sound system, built for professional experiences (say for a studio or live venue), then you’ll want spend the money for premium parts. However, if you are simply installing a sound system for home or mobile use, then most any speaker wire will do just fine. While you can get by with utility scissors (don’t use standard scissors used for paper or fabrics!) you’ll have to insert the wire right at the inside of the blades and cut very carefully. Longer speaker runs for car & home stereo speakers or short runs under 20 ft for 75-100W. Moderate power subwoofers (under 225W) with short lengths.

Aluminum offers a lighter weight and lower cost than copper, so at first it may seem like a great way to replace the more expensive copper options. However, there’s a problem. From 'Ted Lasso' to 'The Morning Show,' Here's What to Watch on Apple TV+ (and How to Stream it Free) It’s a good compromise between price and power handling as it’s usually affordable and easy to find. How to find the correct size wire for ANY length or speaker systemThis is hands-down the most reliable way to extend & splice wire as when done properly the connection is extremely strong, permanent, and has an excellent electrical path. How to solder speaker wire A 3rd way (if you have the tools handy) is to strip off additional insulation then use a soldering iron to saturate the speaker wire fully. Next you can bend it into a nice rigid semi-circle (like a hook shape) that won’t move when you try to tighten the binding posts on top of it. Stranded wire has a big advantage over solid in that it’s very flexible and not prone to breaking under stress. It’s also easier to strip the insulation to bare wire with a wire stripper. It’s also easier to work with if using spade connectors or inserting it into a crimp connector. Loosen each speaker terminal, slide the lug underneath and against the center post, then tighten it firmly. The spade lug should stay in place.
