About this deal

All ‘best of’ guides are subjective to a large extent and this isn’t any different. I live in Scotland and am well travelled in my own country but I really enjoyed this guide. There are two large sections on Edinburgh and Glasgow. The latter I know best because I live here. It doesn’t matter that I didn’t agree on the best restaurants, galleries or walks, or even that the guide is already out of date. It’s a good starting point for any traveller coming to the city. The regional section covers the main tourist centres. I particularly enjoyed the best outdoor and best historical places sections and I have a new list of places to visit. There is also a comprehensive guide to ‘the best’ walks. I’d definitely recommend this to anyone visiting Scotland. I notice there is a 2019 update on its way too. Through the lenses of inspired photographers, meticulous in their craft and immersed in their subjects, we may see the Scottish islands afresh: their rare beauty, atmosphere and essence.’ The next village along, Port Wemyss, has views of the uninhabited island of Orsay and the Rhinns of Islay lighthouse, built in 1825 by the Stevenson lighthouse builders. The coastal road to the south of the island takes you to Mount Stuart, a 19th century Gothic Revival style mansion with extravagant interiors and expansive gardens to explore. The ancestral home of the Marquess of Bute has self catering cottages to rent on the estate, including the six-bedroom Kean’s Cottage overlooking Loch Fad.

Things to do:The dunes of Machrihanish Bayare a stunning sight and nearby Westport Beach is a haven for surfers thanks to the Atlantic swells. Have you really been to Kintyre without seeing the Mull of Kintyre from the lighthouse?! There’s a handful of golf courses here too, all with incredible coastal views. One of the best destinations for a weekend break in Scotland, Fort William sits on the eastern shore of Loch Linnhe, in the shadow of Ben Nevis. The start or end point of the West Highland Way, you are within striking distance of Skye and the Isle of Mull to the west and Fort Augustus to the north. Food & Drink:Book into The Boathouse for a delectable meal. With a great selection of fresh seafood andrecognition from the Michelin Guide five years running, it’ll be a fining dining experience for sure. Food & Drink:Featuring in the Michelin Guide, find your favourite dishes under one roof at The Champany Inn . From succulent cuts of steak, mouth-watering burgers and delicious desserts, you’ll be spoiled for choice!Food & Drink:The Victorian town of Moffatis a great place to head for a lunch, a trip to the woollen mill and a chance to try the local specialty, Moffat Toffee! Ask at the Whisky Museum about the Malt Whisky Trail, a self-guided tour around the local distilleries. If you just have time for one, the Balvenie Distillery is a good bet, as it still uses a traditional malting floor – the smell is glorious! Most sections are done by island and bookended by Irvine’s legendary knowledge of history combined with the best places to go. In 2000 Peter Irvine was given the Thistle award for his personal contribution to tourism in Scotland and in 2002 gained another Thistle award for the Glasgow Art Fair.

Things to do:The new driving route, The Coig , is made up of five unique routes stretching from Ayrshire, Arran and Cumbrae to Inverclyde, Renfrewshire andBute. Travel:Travelling by car is the best way to see Aberfeldy in all its glory and is served by an extensive number of road networks across Scotland’s cities. You can use a combination of both train and bus by getting the train to Perth or Pitlochry. Alternatively you can settle in and enjoy endless cups of tea, with portions of fudge and tablet from the colourful collection of local tearooms and souvenir shops. This area of the country deserves a pilgrimage in 2022. The landscape is nothing short of remarkable. The mountains of Glen Coe are built from some of the oldest volcanic strata in the world, dramatically moulded by fire and ice 380 million years ago.Today, views that stretch to the Highlands, glorious tapestries and juicy history make this Scotland’s best castle – and a great family attraction. Equally popular with Scots and tourists, this is the biggest version yet of the book that helps you decide how best to enjoy Scotland.
