Midnight Library by Matt Haig review - The Guardian The Midnight Library by Matt Haig review - The Guardian

I'm not a huge fan of historical fiction, even historical fantasy, but this was a pretty engaging and interesting read.I thought the book had a lovely balance of the mythical and magical, but with plenty of war time information thrown in that's loosely based on fact. I felt as though this would be a great way to introduce readers to some of the elements of the war and the Blitz, and potentially pique their interest enough to maybe look into things themselves and learn about this terrible part of history. This last week, though, asking people about midnight spaghetti revealed endless personal preferences, but I was glad to be reminded of two things in particular.

The foundation of the idea is the many worlds theory, in which a new universe blossoms from every choice and decision. It’s a beautiful concept, but Matt Haig doesn’t explain it in any depth; his concern is the psychological effect that seeing all these versions has on Nora – and on her willingness, or unwillingness, to live. But those 10 songs don’t adequately tell the story of Midnight Oil’s career. I’ve tried to do that in this list. Still, it burned to omit the magnificent Tarkine, from the band’s most recent album Resist, and Golden Age, from the underrated Capricornia. The 1990s are perhaps unfairly unrepresented , other than two essential cuts from Blue Sky Mine.

The Midnight Guardian Series are young adult paranormal action/adventure novels appropriate for pre-teen and teen readers. This is the first in a new historical crime series from Vaseem Khan, author of the excellent Baby Ganesh Agency novels. Opening on 31 December 1949 in Bombay, it follows Insp Persis Wadia, India’s first female police detective, as she fights both to prove herself (her appointment is greeted with hysteria, with newspapers claiming that “in temperament, intelligence and moral fibre, the female of the species is, and always will be, inferior to the male”) and to solve the murder of the English diplomat Sir James Herriot. Spectacular. A story of real and rare power – one of the best books I’ve read in years.” Kiran Millwood Hargrave, author of THE GIRL OF INK AND STARS
