About this deal

Sunflowers produce their floral reward very promptly after planting and in profusion, but they also have other pleasing characteristics. It is considered among the rarest of all gemstones. [6] [4] The Swiss Gemmological Institute has described it as "a unique treasure of nature" and praised its "well-proportioned cut, highly attractive colour and fine purity". [5] The Gubelin Gem Lab in Lucerne stated that "such a combination of characteristics is very rare in Burmese rubies of this size." [5] The global chairman of Sotheby's International Jewellery Division, David Bennett, when interviewed on the ruby, stated "during his 40 years in the industry, he has never before seen a ruby of this calibre". [5] In a Gubelin grading report, it notes, "ruby is of Burmese origin" and that "its vivid but saturated color, poetically referred to as pigeon blood red, is due to a combination of well balanced trace elements in the stone, typical and characteristic for the finest rubies of Mogok." [8] Gemstones of the same quality typically form in only small crystals, making this one an "extremely rare" gem. [8] History [ edit ] Overall color can often, but not always, offer a clue to a ruby's origin. Stones from Myanmar tend to have purplish red colors. Thai stones tend to appear more brownish red. Vatomandry is said to produce better-quality material, lighter and brighter (more reminiscent of Myanmar), while the Andilamena material is somewhat darker and not as clean. Rutile silk seen in some pieces suggests that star stones may be forthcoming. Most stones from both deposits are heat-treated. Octagonal step-cut ruby, 2.06 cts, 9.52 x 5.37 x 3.65 mm, Madagascar. Kenya and Tanzania While ‘Russian Giant’ is the least tall of our giant sunflower selections at 2.5-3m tall, it produces truly giant flowers at 30cm across. About 90cm tall, ‘Garden Statement’ is a relatively new cultivar that is rapidly gaining popularity. These flowers are truly made for titans, having a mind-boggling width of nearly 50cm. 8) H. annuus‘Giraffe’

Today, there are heating and diffusion processes that can increase the rutile content and improve the star effect in such gems. Inclusions Technically qualifying as a dwarf variety at 75cm tall, ‘Sunsation Yellow’ boasts the plus point of a relatively long blooming season that goes well into autumn. So, whether you're hosting a beach party or just looking to unwind after a long day, these recipes are sure to impress. Although Asia has historically been the major producer of ruby gems, there are many other sources including the United States, Australia, and, most recently, Africa. Origin definitely affects the value of rubies. With the decline in Myanmar production during the 1962--1990 period, the market became conditioned to Thai/Cambodian rubies. Some people actually preferred them. Nevertheless, Thai/Cambodian rubies are acceptable only when good material from Myanmar-type sources isn't available. Today, production from Thailand and Cambodia is negligible. A relatively new cultivar appearing around 2018, ‘Sunbelievable Brown Eyed Girl’ took the bronze medal at that year’s Chelsea Flower Show and it is easy to see why. 1 Rice, G. (2018b, September 28). For this reason, heating doesn't radically lower the value of ruby gems. However, this isn't the case for other more recently invented treatments, such as diffusion coloring or filling with polymer and/or lead glass.

For rubies reasonably clear of inclusions or fractures, no special wear or care precautions are necessary. You can safely use a mechanical system to clean such stones, per the manufacturer's instructions. Reaching a height of around 1.5m and producing flowers of average size and which has a corresponding average blooming season, ‘Velvet Queen’ is actually a very special cultivar. The term "star ruby," in addition to referring to rubies that display asterism, many also refer to transparent red corundum too light or too purple to properly call ruby. a b Ginanne Brownell Mitic (13 May 2015). Care The rays are a light bright yellow and, at another point of departure, the light brown discs are quite small and not as prominent as in most other varieties’ flowers. As a perennial rather than an annual, this species has the edge in terms of annual gardening labour,” says Colin Skelly, a Horticultural Consultant. Stones from Kenya and Tanzania are magnificent when clean, but facet-grade material is rare. Like Myanmar, much of this material is strongly fluorescent. These deposits have produced no star stones.
