Cast iron manhole covers and outside drain covers reach a higher loading class than galvanised steel, and the stronger material allows them to be classified for higher weight loads. An F900 class cast iron manhole cover weighs 145kg and is certified to hold up to 90 tonnes of weight. Meanwhile, galvanised steel manhole covers can be used in areas with slow traffic or pedestrian traffic, as this material is not suitable for use on highways and roads.
