About this deal

A deluxe DVD – The Sting: Special Edition (part of the Universal Legacy Series) – was released in September 2005. Its "making of" featurette, The Art of the Sting, included interviews with cast and crew.

Reading this book, you definitely get the sense that it was. Schmidt had a real love and respect for the insects he studied, as well as a sense of humor which radiates from his writing. That I never really thought about bullet ants, cow killers, and social wasps before his book makes me feel like I was definitely missing something.

Some highlights: the Sting Scale! Jennifer quotes a few of those. Pure pain poetry. Hint: avoid Harvester Ants! These guys sting seriously hurts for a long time. Like honey bees, they leave the whole sting apparatus behind in your skin when they sting you. providing “a richer, fuller dose of venom.” Yikes! Tommy Boyle’s life may not be perfect, but as long as he has his mother and sisters, it’s a life he’s happy with, then one day everything changes as Tommy finds himself taken into care. It’s here he meets Scratch, and they become inseparable, after being cruelly betrayed by everyone they ever trusted, they make a pact to make a better future for themselves once they reach sixteen. Unfortunately for the pair circumstances change and Tommy joins the notorious Darlings firm and Scratch joins the police, as you can imagine this doesn’t bode well. Neither knows the devastating consequences of their actions that lie ahead. Every movie seems to end up on The Great White Way sooner or later. Last year, it was announced that The Sting will be adapted by Bob Martin (writer of Broadway’s The Drowsy Chaperone and Elf) and the team of Greg Kotis and Mark Hollmann (who wrote Urinetown). There’s no word yet on whether Joplin’s rags (adapted for the movie by Marvin Hamlisch) will be incorporated, but surely a stage version of The Sting will need to have at least a little ragtime. Right? 14. IT INSPIRED A SEQUEL THAT JUST ABOUT EVERYONE DISAVOWED.

The characters are believable but not always likeable. The motivation for their actions is always clear. This story does highlight the horror of child abuse, which is never an easy subject to read, but it is dealt with sensitively. The abuse the two main characters suffer is integral to their future character development and initially defines the adults they become. So, science can actually be interesting to the lay person because we are curious to know how our stings rate. Not high, as it turns out. Sort of medium, in fact. Right in the middle of the scale. It did not have a big cast of characters in it which is a good thing so in return because of that we get to connect with each character on an emotional level especially the main protagonist Tommy Boyle.

Justin O. Schmidt is the entomologist who developed the Schmidt Pain Index that ranks how much pain different insect stings deliver on a scale of 1 to 4 with 4 being the rolling on the ground in agony pain. He wrote The Sting of the Wild to not just tell his pain index story, but to explore how stinging evolved and to what purpose. Roger Ebert gave the film four out of four stars and called it "one of the most stylish movies of the year". [17] Gene Siskel awarded three-and-a-half stars out of four, calling it "a movie movie that has obviously been made with loving care each and every step of the way." [18] Vincent Canby of The New York Times wrote that the film was "so good-natured, so obviously aware of everything it's up to, even its own picturesque frauds, that I opt to go along with it. One forgives its unrelenting efforts to charm, if only because The Sting itself is a kind of con game, devoid of the poetic aspirations that weighed down Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid." [19] Variety wrote, "George Roy Hill's outstanding direction of David S. Ward's finely-crafted story of multiple deception and surprise ending will delight both mass and class audiences. Extremely handsome production values and a great supporting cast round out the virtues." [20] Kevin Thomas of the Los Angeles Times called it "an unalloyed delight, the kind of pure entertainment film that's all the more welcome for having become such a rarity." [21] John Simon wrote that The Sting as a comedy-thriller "works endearingly without a hitch". [22] Entomologist Justin O. Schmidt is on a mission. Some say it's a brave exploration, others shake their heads in disbelief. His goal? To compare the impacts of stinging insects on humans, mainly using himself as the gauge. I’ve only read 2 Kimberly Chambers novels, but I can see why she has such a huge following. I saw an interview that she did for the BBC a couple of months ago, and she’s just so down to earth, and that’s something that transfers to her writing with great success.

LaSalle Street Station". Metra. Archived from the original on September 24, 2014 . Retrieved July 10, 2014. His focus is on ants, bees, and wasps, the triumvirate of stinging insects. The insects are both prey and predator. Honeybees and fire ants sting to protect their homes. On the other hand, tarantula hawks (a wasp) stink to paralyze their tarantula prey so they can drag it home to be eaten alive for weeks as their eggs develop into pupa. I sure hope tarantulas don’t feel pain or have awareness because the larvae feed on them while alive and they don’t die until they develop into pupae and eat the brain and nerve cells. It’s so gross. The Sting of the Wild is a great book for lay readers. Think of it as insect gossip, though verified gossip, of course. It has that convivial tone of sharing what’s going on with the Jones, but the Jones are killer bees. It’s full of fun anecdotes including tales of stings in history and tidbits of information such as the infamous “yellow rain” that Gen. Alexander Haig claimed was a chemical weapon dropped on the Hmong in retaliation for their helping the US that turned out to be bee poop. For those of you within and outside of Australia, who do not know the name Daniel Morcombe, then this book will tell you why it is important his name be remembered. I would say that most Australians know the name Daniel Morcombe, and most Australians would have some knowledge of what happened to Daniel on the day he walked to the bus stop. Most Australians know the significance of a red t-shirt.I experienced just about every possible human emotion while reading The Bee Sting, and at an intensity I have not felt with a work of fiction for a long time. Its ambition and scale are astonishing, and as a sheer technical feat of storytelling it is remarkable. Reading it, I was constantly reminded of what the novel as an artform is capable of, and what it is for. It might be a bold claim to make, of the author of Skippy Dies, that this new book is the best thing Paul Murray has ever done - but I'm making it anyway, because it's true Mark O'Connell, author of 'To Be A Machine'

Schmidt explains that, for some insects, stinging is used for hunting: small wasps, for example, can paralyze huge caterpillars and then lay their eggs inside so that their larvae can feast within. Others are used to kill competing insects, even members of their own species. Humans usually experience stings as defensive maneuvers used by insects to protect their nest mates. What I didn’t know is that professor Justin Schmidt made his career out of being stung by as many insects as he could and creating a “pain index” on a scale of 1-4.Kent, David (1993). Australian Chart Book 1970–1992 (illustrateded.). St Ives, N.S.W.: Australian Chart Book. p.281. ISBN 978-0-6461-1917-5. Where did it all go wrong? A patch of ice on the tarmac, a casual favour to a charming stranger, a bee caught beneath a bridal veil?
