By repeated attempts we got the Home 150s to update, and the subwoofer updated itself overnight when we left the ‘auto update’ option. So our advice if this happens to you is to give up, go to bed, and try again in the morning! Our advice to Denon’s HEOS crew (which coordinates the HEOS world from Sydney) would be to make their app a little smarter at resolving such problems. Some of its options will be overkill if you simply want something to stream music from your phone, but it's nice to have such flexibility.
