About this deal

I remember having an entrancing discussion about this book with one of my friends who is a Psychiatrist in D.C. We concluded that we should not be pedantic about it and leave it alone as just another painfully didactic fiction which came in the disguise of a psychological thriller. A young psychiatrist goes head-to-head with a patient with a reputation for driving caregivers mad. a b Petski, Denise (October 7, 2021). The Patient is an American psychological thriller limited series created and written by Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg, who also serve as showrunners and are executive producers along with Chris Long, Caroline Moore, Victor Hsu, and Steve Carell. It premiered on August 30, 2022, on FX on Hulu and concluded on October 25 of that same year, consisting of ten episodes. The series stars Carell, Domhnall Gleeson, and Linda Emond. Her first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, came out in 1920. During her first marriage, Agatha published six novels, a collection of short stories, and a number of short stories in magazines. In late 1926, Agatha's husband, Archie, revealed that he was in love with another woman, Nancy Neele, and wanted a divorce. On 8 December 1926 the couple quarreled, and Archie Christie left their house, Styles, in Sunningdale, Berkshire, to spend the weekend with his mistress at Godalming, Surrey. That same evening Agatha disappeared from her home, leaving behind a letter for her secretary saying that she was going to Yorkshire. Her disappearance caused an outcry from the public, many of whom were admirers of her novels. Despite a massive manhunt, she was not found for eleven days.Serial killer kidnaps therapist” was obviously the elevator pitch’ … Domhnall Gleeson and Steve Carell in The Patient. There are no British cultural references and or British expressions. This book could be set anywhere. Nothing is as it seems in this novel. This story is complex and multi-layered with a labyrinth of characters, each playing their part in the development of the plot.Rachel is a doctor with a rather quiet life who has an affair with her patient Luc, a French painter who with his wife has bought and renovated a home near where Rachel and her husband live. Recently, I read it again. I wanted to see if the magic of the first time is still there or if, now knowing the twists, the story would feel lesser than. And I'm so happy to report that I loved it just as much the second time around. Now, instead of having to pay attention to the plot, I could really focus on how masterfully Alex Michaelides built up the mystery and its reveal. And it really is something to marvel at.

And, oh, my, did I find the protagonist, Rachel Goodchild, tedious. At first I was engaged by her off-kilter observations. For the first third of the book I assumed she was going to be an unreliable narrator who was justifying nefarious deeds to herself and, therefore, to us as readers. But, no. She turned out really to be trying to justify what she told us she was at the start - her distant relationship from her daughter, Lizzie. When Theo Faber, Criminal Psychotherapist, takes a new job at The Grove, he is well aware of their most infamous patient, Alicia Berenson. I’ve read a few books this year by former GPs, and they all make me grateful not to be one any more - then it occurred to me that contented current doctors are too busy to write books, so I’m probably getting a skewed perspective. I do like the accuracy that medical authors bring to scene-setting and plot details. Friends often ask if I’ve thought about writing a book myself, but I like reading and reviewing too much, and besides - I have no imagination! Anyone who has read a review for this book has, by now, heard about the stunning twist that apparently caught most readers off guard. But, let’s not get too hung up on the twist. In my humble opinion, a mind -blowing twist is a requirement of any and all psychological thrillers. What makes a twist work in the first place is the mystery.Chris Evans' Dog Adorably Interrupts His Interview With 'The View': "He Needs To Be The Center Of Attention" I feel like I should preface my review by stating that I have read A LOT of psychological thrillers, and coupling that with the fact that this was my most anticipated read of 2019 gave The Silent Patient a great deal of pressure. This will still be an overall positive review, but I felt I had to include some honest thoughts here as well for those readers who may need their expectations in line like I clearly did. Carell helps fashion this as a survival story as well, in Alan collecting his sense of inner strength that comes from his faith—including a vision of Man’s Search for Meaning author Viktor Frankl at the concentration camp that inspired said book. The weak tension in the plotting doesn’t feed a nervousness about Alan's survival, but we can at least see the endurance at stake in Carell’s progressively weary gaze. All the while, he must have a calm voice while using different therapeutic methods on Sam, strategizing ways he might convince Sam to eventually let him go.
