If you have ever spoken with professional painters, they will tell you that prep work is the most important step to any paint job and takes the most time. Painting kitchen cabinets is no exception, it super critical to get the prep right for a durable long-term finish. I had this inexpensive sprayer for years, and I just upgraded to this one, which is great because it doesn’t require that the paint is thinned and it is cordless!. This sprayer is very similar to mine but has a cord, which makes it a great mid-range option.

Next up on our list is Coo-Var Shellac Primer which is newer to the market but has gained a foothold amongst decorators as their go-to shellac-based primer. Once you have your paintable caulk and caulking gun, consider removing all the old silicone caulk before applying a fresh sealant. This will allow for the strongest, most long-lasting seal. I also don’t think you have as many colour choices or sheen control with those types of paints (they tend to be a lot more matte), so I personally wouldn’t use them for a kitchen. Paint won’t bond to non paintable silicone without a primer. In fact, it can be challenging to get silicone to bond to anything at all! In my mom’s laundry room, I used this liquid sander instead of sanding and that paint is doing just fine. I do suggest either doing a little sanding or using the liquid sander, you just don’t have to go crazy with it. We also built some basic flat-front drawers out of raw MDF. I needed to paint it the same colour as the rest of the cabinet doors (Benjamin Moore Mink Violet). If you’re applying the second caulk directly on top of the previous caulk, make sure you clean the old caulk with a little denatured alcohol first to remove any oil.

The secret ingredient

Zinsser BIN Primer Sealer seals surface pores so you use less finish paint. Finish coat has rich uniform appearance, with no "high" and "low" spots. Finish resists dirt better and has better scrubbability. It works so well because shellac spray creates a more adhesive surface over the silicone for the paint to bind to. Use synthetic brushes, such as polyester or nylon, with latex primer. Natural bristle brushes work best if you're using oil-based primers.
