To be honest I didn’t like Ryland that much. He didn’t stand out in any way to me. And I think that Riona is too good for him. Sure, he’s a sweetheart, he didn’t really do anything bad, I just … he was average. The Beauty and the beast references were very on the nose and that dulled my enjoyment. It was like it was drilled into me that I’m supposed to see them as beauty and the beast. Riona Griffin is gorgeous, intelligent, and iron-willed. Her fear and all was pretty realistic in the beginning and her crying like that I would be crying too The Kingmakers setting that Sophie Lark created is really amazing. I’m not sure if it can be considered a “worldbuilding” because this book is not fantasy, but it almost feels like it because it’s a fictional college with its own hierarchy and rules. The place itself has that historical and a slight magical feel to it. It even has a big school-wide competition between the different years, very reminiscent of Quidditch in HP.

The Griffins and the Gallos have been in a battle, to the death, to have the control of the mob underworld of Chicago for generations. Their legacy of violence and death has been a part of their culture for decades. There appears to be no resolution towards peace between the families.
