About this deal

There are not enough stars on Goodreads to contain my love for this book. This is by far the best Brotherband or Ranger's Apprentice book to release in a long time, and this is coming from someone who likes the Royal Ranger books (the fandom is pretty heated on those). Now talking about the dodgy numbers in these books, everyone is crazily scaled down to the point where it is impossible to believe. Like I said, I get that it is MG fantasy fiction like saying that an entire nation based off the Mongol Empire can move around in ‘thousands’ of tents even seem a bit far fetched for that. Yes tribal migrations happened but there are more than just soldiers, like if there are thousands of warriors, then where are the children and the small percentage of the elderly. For me, and again, it’s just my own opinion, but I like a bit more realism than that. The boys are bored being aground as they wait for the results of the Maktig. Then Stig’s outlaw father shows up, begging for help. Obviously, I thought it was good, even if it is less exciting than previous stories in the series. It’s taking Hal’s abilities for granted, showing off how well-practiced are the crew. But it does demonstrate that Hal isn’t always perfect, but very willing to think again.

I discovered THE RANGER’S APPRENTICE series a few years ago when I was trying to find books for the kid to read. I brought home the first in that series and gave it to her. She was uninterested (she is a reluctant reader, which breaks my heart—but what can you do?). So, I read it myself. In the stories of Will and Halt, I found that same sort of goodness that I got from “Winter Soldier.” When I discovered the RA series, eleven books were out. The twelfth, and final book, was on the way. I tore through the whole series in a week. I couldn’t put them down. Sure, Will was a big Mary Sue. Sure, I knew that things were going to work out in the end for the main characters. I still enjoyed them. Hal, his Brotherband crew, and the Ranger Gilan have freed the twelve Araluens sold into slavery. Returning to Araluen, Gilan is given a new mission by King Duncan: protect his daughter’s life. Princess Cassandra has survived one attempt on her life already, and now whispers of a second attempt have reached the kingdom. A deadly sect known as the Scorpion Cult is thought to be behind the assassination threat. Eighth in the Brotherband Chronicles historical action-adventure series (a spin-off from Flanagan's Ranger's Apprentice series) for middle-grade readers revolving around the young Hal and his crew. Hannah Olafson is a good cook who survives by taking in laundry; she’s also Stig’s abandoned mother. Olaf Attelson is the stinkin’ selfish jerk of a father who stole from his crewmates and ran off years ago. Now he’s the commander of the emperor’s palace guard in Byzantos. I did laugh several times in this book, as with prior books. The scene with the “best men” at the wedding was adorable. a warlike, nomadic race from beyond the mountains whose primary mission is conquest and domination — think Genghis Khan! Pa'tong is the Sha'shan, the ultimate leader of the Temujai. Lek'to is the Sha'shan's wife. En'tak was demoted from his position as an Ulan commander and now commands a 10-man patrol; Ka'zhak, his best friend, is the demoted deputy commander of that patrol. Ho'mat is one of Pa'tong's generals. Ga'tan is a senior Ulan commander. Mori is the Great Horse Spirit they worship. Well, that's my thoughts on those issues. In general I enjoyed the book and the action is still good, but I do have some issues with plot lines being abandoned and not keeping the characters ages/timeline straight. I'm mostly removing a half star for the slow start. I feel like by this point that the author is slowly running out of ideas. To be fair to him, he has published a huge amount of work, but over the last few years, from my point of view, there are slowly been a dip in quality in his books. This book reuses an old idea from two of his old books and while the plot if different, nothing really comes of at the end and there is very little pay off. Instead of being excited about what was going on, it felt a bit predictable and uninteresting in my opinion. Also, I found myself to be so BORED. I simply wanted things to hurry up and get a move on. We’ve all seen this ship travel and fighting and sneaking around in the other 7 Brotherband books already.

John Flanagan, author of the international phenomenon Ranger's Apprentice, creates a new cast of characters to populate his world of Skandians and Araluens, a world millions of young readers around the world have come to know and admire. Full of seafaring adventures and epic battles, Book 1 of The Brotherband Chronicles is sure to thrill readers of Ranger's Apprentice while enticing a whole new generation just now discovering the books. The epic series from Ranger's Apprentice author John Flanagan continues, delivering pulse-pounding adventure and fun. The characters weren't great to start with. Yes, I love Hal and Stig and the rest of the herons, but when the writing and story is bland, there's no way to really connect with the characters or enjoy them. Even the humour felt stilted and forced. And even with all the different characters there was absolutely no character development. Geo trades in his Star Carrier for the new Hunter VG, forcing him to once more reform his BrotherBands. Much like the second game, BrotherBands grant boosts to a player's Link Power. This time, however, a player can form BrotherBands with even more in-game NPCs by helping complete sidequests. Real life Brothers grant a player their Brother cards, which allows for the player to Merge Out with their own Noise Change, in addition to the original roulette function. Real-life Brothers now grant up to 130 Link Power.

But I had a few complaints with this one. It's still getting 4 stars becuase these books are so darn enjoyable, but that doesn't mean I think each one is perfect.
