About this deal

Ahead, we lay out the best methods for cleaning every type of microwave — including over-the-range, built-in and countertop models — as well as tips for getting rid of unpleasant smells (lemon can help!) and pointers on washing turntables and filters. Just following our detailed step-by-step directions to make the cleaning process as easy as possible.

For light odors (spicy food with a strong aroma, for example), air out the oven by leaving the door open, or place a bowl of baking soda inside with the door closed to absorb smells. You should now have a much cleaner microwave! Remember to regularly inspect it to prevent any grease or smells from building up in the future. How to get a bad smell out of the microwave

6. Lemon and Water

When time is up, DO NOT open the door straight away. Instead, leave the trapped steam in the machine for 10 minutes to give it time to soften any built-up grime.

Use a sponge or cloth to wipe away any softened food and stains inside the microwave. Pay extra attention to any particularly stubborn spots, and use a scraper or toothbrush to gently loosen and remove them. Start by removing any large pieces of food or debris from the inside of the microwave. Use a damp cloth or sponge to wipe away any crumbs or loose bits of food. Dry the surfaces with a clean towel to prevent streaks, and your microwave will be sparkling clean and ready to use. For strong odors (think: burnt popcorn), clean any leftover residue and place an odor-absorbing gel, like Fresh Wave, inside until you run it again. To clean the microwave’s interior, take a non-scratch sponge and wipe each surface from the top down. That way, any debris from burnt-on food will collect at the bottom and can be wiped away before you begin cleaning the bottom half. And don’t forget to clean the rubber seal around the door where dirt can be easily caught. Let the paste sit for 5-10 minutes, then wipe it away with a damp cloth. The bicarbonate of soda will absorb any odours and leave your microwave smelling fresh and clean.

On the tough stains, use the sponge to create a large amount of foam over the stain, and then just turn on the microwave for a few minutes at high heat. Remove the turntable and glass plate from the microwave. Wet the melamine sponge to make it foam up. Just be sure to avoid the vents and any electrical components. Instead, spray the mixture onto a clean cloth and gently wipe the areas down. Again, you’ll need to rinse the microwave with a damp cloth afterwards. If you don’t have dish soap or vinegar, you can place half a lemon in a bowl of water and cook it for five minutes. This all-natural cleaning option comes with the bonus of a fresh citrus scent. Add a few drops of your favourite essential oil if you want to leave a nice scent - the only downside to cleaning with vinegar is the strong smell it leaves behind

Use biocides safely and sustainably. It is illegal to use this product for uses or in a manner other than prescribed on this label. Dispose of contents/container in accordance with local regulations. If you’re struggling to shift a bad smell from a microwave, such as burnt popcorn or fish, then place a small bowl of baking soda in the center. Shut the door and leave it to sit overnight to absorb the smell. Leave the microwave door open afterwards to air. Tips to keep your microwave cleanOnce the steam has done its work, carefully remove the bowl from the microwave (it will be hot!). Remove the glass plate and turntable, cleaning these separately in the sink with soap and water. It's not just the inside that counts. Remove smudges and grease from your microwave's greasy exterior windows with these steps.
