About this deal

These weightings are based on how consumers rank the importance of different attributes of mayonnaise. Recycling your mayo bottles When we tested vegan mayo in 2022, several supermarket brands, including Morrisons and Sainsbury’s, were rated highly by our tasting panel. Hellmann’s vegan mayo also went down well, but if you're looking to save on vegan mayo, it's worth giving own brands a try. So that’s what they do have in them – what about what they don’t? EU guidelines recommend that mayonnaise should contain at least 70 per cent fat and 5 per cent liquid egg yolk. The standard ranges hit those levels, but the budget ranges came in much lower. For a long, long time, we've been committed to sustainable farming, responsible business, and doing right by the people who help us make Hellmann's. Not just because we think it makes our products better, but also because it's the right thing to do. It's why we only use 100% free-range eggs and source 100% of our oils responsibly in our mayonnaise. It's why our ketchup is made with 100% sustainably grown tomatoes. And why we're always working to create new products that help fight food waste, or use up less energy, or generally do good for the world. Because we're on the side of food. We've also launched a premium range of BBQ sauces including Smokey American, Spicy Brazilian, and Mexican Chipotle, to spice up barbecues across the UK.

Salt levels are medium to high, while protein, fibre and sugar are all low. All-in-all, mayonnaise is a condiment to be enjoyed in moderation. What about light mayo? Wobbly, and a bit bland on its own but it would take other flavours well. Lidl and Morrisons both also had passable versions. Of the budget pair we tried, this was the better one, with a sweet vinegary flavour. But it’s the only brand not to use free range eggs. The panellists rated the taste, texture, aroma and appearance of each brand of mayonnaise and told us what they liked and disliked about each one.

Unctuous, devoid of strange additives, and endlessly adaptable – stir in 1tbsp olive oil and a crushed clove of garlic for extra flavour.

Rapeseed oil mostly contains unsaturated fat, though, and most of the mayos we tested only just tipped into the red traffic light ‘high’ rating for saturated fat. It turns out that in the UK, there are no rules: in fact manufacturers can leave out egg altogether. According to the UK Food Standards Agency, “Mayonnaise doesn’t absolutely have to have eggs in by law, but it is expected, so an indication of the substituting ingredient must be given.” So all those vegan mayonnaises ought to be making clear what they use instead of egg. The brands I looked at certainly weren’t putting that information on the front of the label. Vegan mayo is often pricier. For example, Hellmann’s vegan mayo costs about 25% more than its standard squeezy bottle.
