During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. The elderly are more likely to experience neurological anticholinergic effects. Consideration should be given to using a lower daily dose (e.g. a maximum of 12 mg in any 24 hours). Some products that may interact with this drug are: antihistamines applied to the skin (such as diphenhydramine cream, ointment, spray). Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects, including: mental/mood changes (such as restlessness, confusion), trouble urinating, fast/irregular heartbeat. Contains Sodium methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E219) and Sodium propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E217): May cause allergic reactions (possibly delayed).

Elimination Route

Take the tablet, capsule, or liquid form by mouth with or without food. Follow the directions for dosing on the label, or take as directed by your doctor. This medication may be taken with food or milk if stomach upset occurs. Although most antihistamines should be avoided by patients with porphyria, chlorpheniramine maleate has been used and is thought to be safe. Adults (including elderly) and children: One sachet after each loose motion (watery stool) up to a maximum of 5 sachets per day for 3-4 days.

Patients with renal or hepatic impairment should seek doctor's advice prior to taking this medicine. (see section 4.4 Special warnings and precautions for use). In mice, rats, and rabbits, cetirizine was not teratogenic at oral doses up to 96, 225, and 135 mg/kg, respectively (approximately 40, 180 and 220 times the maximum recommended daily oral dose in adults). There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Because animal studies are not always predictive of human response, cetirizine should be used in pregnancy only if clearly needed .
