s Rhino Hero is one of, if not my #1, favorite game from family game publisher HABA Games. It garnered a 5 Star review here on BGQ and makes it’s way to our gaming table early and often (with and without kids present). So when I heard they were releasing a sequel, I was all in. I just hoped that they didn’t screw up a brilliant game by bogging it down with too many unnecessary rules. Let’s find out if they did.

The first player correctly places walls on the guidelines provided on the start tile. From here, they choose a roof tile from their own hand to give the next player their platform to test their steel. If this roof tile is plain, the next player goes ahead as before. However, if there is a symbol on the roof card, it may affect the next player’s turn.

If you’re looking for a game that is made well, with illustrations that will make you smile and a premise that is easy-to-learn and easy-to-teach then this is a great starting point. It’s difficult to find a game that keeps all the family engaged these days – there’s so many distractions with social media and technology on demand that sitting kids down for anything longer than half an hour is a task, but with Rhino Hero you can set-up, play and declare a winner in well-under 15 minutes. Super Battle emulates the perfect crescendo; a smooth and circumspect event but as the skyscraper grows, the tension begins to build until the grand finale of everything toppling over and exploding like a firework of urban landscape. The double-sided starting tile should then be placed: the side showing the two wall placement lines is your easier option, the side showing only one can be used for a more competitive family shootout or by those up for a challenge.Rhino Hero is about a heroic rhinoceros, clad in a cape and cowl, trying to scale a skyscraper! (If that hasn’t grabbed your attention, nothing will.) Technically this is a children’s game by hugely popular publisher HABA, but don’t let that put you off. While you can – and will – enjoy this with children of all ages (realistically aged five and up, for them to grasp the dexterity concept), it’s also guaranteed to be a smash hit with the adults, too! Rhino Hero is the extremely popular prequel to Rhino Hero Super Battle. Created by the innovative HABA company, this game is the modern-day Jenga with a far better theme and lots more interactivity, making it a fantastic first step into the new-era of “board gaming.” I have two small negatives about Super Battle. First, it feels like a missed opportunity that this game does not integrate with the original, and second, the box is far larger than it needs to be. These issues aside, however, the production of this game is top-notch, and it’s great fun to play. The walls as well! The walls are made out of high-quality card which after many play throughs, simply refuse to fray and crease horribly. Personal Point Rhino Hero is joined by three other action heroes and hanging spider monkeys. Includes 2 dice for hero battles when they land on the same floor.

If the active player’s hero is now higher on the tower than anyone else’s, they claim the superhero medal token. This token will change hands throughout the game as players grapple to be king of the hill. Then, to conclude their turn, the active player draws a new floor card.

The entire rhythm of the game then basically works towards making sure things get big and things get tall. This means that when the last player actually does make the move that causes the whole thing to come tumbling down there’s a proportionate payout for the work you did. It’s not that this is necessarily better than what Rhino Hero accomplished but it’s different and in a way that I personally believe makes it a more genuinely enjoyable experience. It gives you more opportunity for skilful and strategic play, but it never loses the core of what makes Rhino Hero itself worth playing – the sheer anarchic fun that comes from destroying something beautiful. You might spend a little more on this than you would for Rhino Hero itself but I don’t think for an instant you’d find yourself regretting the extra. Unusually, I might even go an additional step and say ‘Seriously, get both – you can mix and match and that’s the best of all possible worlds’. This isn’t a circumstance where one game obsoletes the other – they can co-exist in the same game library because they are going to give you different flavours of the experience. It’s like having strawberry and chocolate ice-cream in the freezer. Having one doesn’t mean you won’t fancy the other when you finally get around to grabbing a bowl. HABA Games had their work cut out for them in trying to improve upon the crossover hit that was Rhino Hero… and they completely succeeded. Rhino Hero: Super Battle is incredibly fun, easy to learn, and definitely is not just for kids. Sure, you can play this one with your little ones, and then once you shove them off to bed, play again without them. Set up begins with a trio of foundation tiles that make up the game floor. Players then choose a hero and are given three floor cards. Each of these cards acts as a “floor” tile that tells you how to place it on top of folded sections of card that make up the building’s walls. These come in short and tall varieties, with one tall wall section being twice the height of a short section. Players build the tower by placing these wall sections on either the foundation board or an existing floor card, then place their own floor card on top. Some cards have spider monkey symbols on them, which have you either place or move a small cardboard monkey chit up to your newly placed floor, where it must be placed hanging from the side. This can can be a delicate balancing act as you get higher up. Once a player has placed their floor card, they roll a die to see if they move up or down on the tower (results here range from -1 to 3 on a 6-sided die). If they end up on the same floor as another hero they “fight” by rolling off, with the loser getting shoved down. Whichever hero is currently at the top gets a medal to denote their status. Rhino Hero: Super Battle takes a game that was decent and makes it superb. Playing this game is a blast, and I recommend it for kids and adults alike. I thought the original Rhino Hero was decent, but nothing to write home about. Rhino Hero: Super Battle, on the other hand, is fantastic. This game completely replaces the old one for me.Is it going to enthrall those of us who are more tactically minded and want to feel like we’ve worked a bit harder for our victory? Probably not, nor is it going to be a game that you revisit for its own replay-ability and depth. The quirk of this game is in its humour-inducing ability, not in its own greatness. It is one-dimensional and is better played with a few of you. It also requires a level surface with no surplus movement – a fan the other end of the room or an un-even table will cause you problems – which makes it limited in where and when you can play it. There can be few games which provide as much tension and laughter to both children and adults as Rhino Hero Super Battle does.
