The first volume gets right into with Gabimaru the Hollow and his repeated failed executions. For a man who is calm about dying, his body is resistant to it. Yamada Asaemon Sagiri is an executioner who specializes in decapitating. She is there is to observe and document. Their fates become entwined when Gabimaru agrees to a mission to find 'the elixir of Life' and get a pardon for his crimes and Sagiri is his minder who if he goes sideways, she will execute him. Even though the art in Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku features some gruesome content, I still find Yuji Kaku’s art style to be beautiful. The way he depicts certain scenes is really impactful and the story could be told alone through his art. With such amazing illustrations, I always worry that the story-telling won’t be on the same level, but that’s not the case here. Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku is visually-appealing, but it also has a gripping story, and it’s one of the few manga as of late that has excelled in both areas. Taking into account the premise, I should have liked Hell’s Paradise more than I actually did, although the art style, messy panels, and Gabimaru (there was something about him I just couldn’t “dig” - if that’s the right word) all made this a fair 3 star read.

Gabimaru is a reluctant but skilled and nearly indestructible ninja. He is sentenced to be executed, which is no easy thing. They try boiling him, burning at the stake, and various other tactics, before he gets recruited for a suicide mission: to find the Elixir of Life on a mysterious island. So far, all missions the shogunate has sent to the island have resulted in total loss of life, so why not send a rag-tag, cutthroat group of murderers on death row? Each criminal is assigned a baby-sitter in the form of elite executioners, just to keep them from wandering off. The prize for the one who finds the Elixir? A full pardon! The premise is simple enough. A group of criminals and the minders are sent to an island. A paradise, but as the title says, it is a hell's paradise, but they all have reason to want to find that elixir. For Gabimaru, it is straightforward. He wants the pardon so he can return to his wife. I also didn’t understand why Sagiri was prone to being depicted naked when she remembered her past kills…and what, if anything, that served… Hell's Paradise: Jigokuraku, Vol. 2". Viz Media. Gabimaru the Hollow, a ninja of Iwagakure Village known for being cold and emotionless, was set up by his fellow ninja and is now on death row. Tired of killing and betrayal, he wants to die. However, no method of execution works on him because as much as the seemingly apathetic Gabimaru refuses to admit it, he does have a reason to live. He wants to return to his wife, who was the reason why he softened up and failed to be an effective assassin. Thus, he refuses to die. I would say that these series was very gore and very graphic but its very character driven. I liked that its straight to the point, has little filler scenes and just straight up introduced the character and his drive to be a "person". I already liked Gabimaru. He's a bit funny and quirky but he's super powerful despite his small size. The setting is during the time where ninjas and samurais are, and it made the story extra fun. For now, I would say I'm actually invested in the series. Honestly can't wait for the rest of the volumes but definitely can't binge read this, cause its a tad heavy. The Yamada Asaemon ( 山田浅ェ門) is a prestigious swordsmen dojo in Edo. They train sword testers to become fully-fledged executioners for the Shogunate. Once fully trained, each swordsman has their name preceded by the title "Yamada Asaemon." A second season was announced after the airing of the thirteenth episode. [54] Episodes [ edit ] No. Yamada 'Asaemon' Sagiri the Decapitator, a famous executioner, sees this and has a proposal for the ninja. She wants Gabimaru to join an expedition to an island south of Japan in search of the elixir of life in exchange for a full pardon by the Shogunate. However, this island isn't a normal island: it's believed to be Paradise.
