Description

I have no problem recommending this camera for any street shooter looking for a smaller kit that doesn’t sacrifice image quality or usability for size.

A high-performance processor “Accelerator Unit” has been adopted on this model as a powerful way to support high image quality. The signal output by the image sensor is sent to the image processor after being optimally handled. This reduces noise, delivering superb resolution and color reproduction across the entire sensitivity range. It also makes it possible to shoot at ISO 102400. sec. – 30 sec. (Limit by aperture setting F2.8: 1/2500 sec, F5.6 or greater: 1/4000 sec.), Timed Exposure (10sec. – 20min.), Bulb, Time Details are nice and sharp across the frame, even when you're using the camera at its widest f/2.8 aperture, and distortion is minimal. Vignetting is more of a problem, although this can be rectified with the Peripheral Illumination Correction feature. Images don't quite have the most pleasing colors straight out of the camera, so you may want to tweak this before you shoot (or after with the Raw Development feature, which works very well).

The major difference between the GR III and GR III X is the lens. The GR III has been designed with a 28mm focal length while the GR III X has a larger 40mm equivalent focal length creating a slightly narrower field of view. Despite seeming like a potentially small difference, it can be majorly impactful depending on the style of photography you are more inclined to produce.

A six-element, four-group optical system is used to achieve images that are sharp from the center to the edge with clear depiction. The optical system is slim and compact so the body can accommodate an in-camera Shake Reduction mechanism. The effects of camera shake on image quality are minimized and the full capabilities of the newly designed GR lens optical performance are maximized for a variety of scenes. My second most commonly used feature is the touch-screen shutter release. Now, this might be a very widespread function among cameras but since my Leica M does not have a touch screen it is new for me. And apparently, this is also new for a lot of Ricoh GR users as this function is only available in the latest firmware version. So if you have, for some reason, not updated yet, you should really go for it. Yup, the GR3 (like a lot of recent cameras) only ships with an adapter to plug your camera into the wall to charge the batteries. In all fairness the GR3 uses a USB-C for charging so it feels a bit more secure than the tiny micro usb on other cameras. Either way, it’s a a terrible solution because you can’t use your camera while you’re charging your batteries.Ricoh has included Highlight-weighted metering the GR3 and it’s kind of a big deal. Basically, it’s an AE mode that exposes for the highlights and prevents them from blowing out in high contrast scenes like we often see on the street. Anyway, because of that, the most common f-stop is probably going to be f/8. However, the one use case where this camera could use a faster lens is in night photography. Otherwise, I do not really have a problem with the lens. By touching the LCD monitor, focus on the specified [Snap Focus Distance] then release the shutter. Battery Recharge/Power Supply (Optional AC Adapter required), Data Transfer: MTP, Video output: DisplayPort over USB-C (DisplayPort Alternative Mode)

Something to be aware of within the GR III series is that the GR III and the GR III X don’t share the same thread. This means that accessories like conversion lenses won’t be interchangeable between the two body types. With the fixed 28mm focal length, you can get a lot in an image, but sometimes you might find yourself standing just in the wrong spot to get all the detail in the frame. The small size of the GR series makes it almost enjoyable to be able to move around so effortlessly. No need to factor in heavy lenses that might limit how you hold the camera, you can dart and swerve between crowds with ease. Corrected --- When shooting with the multiple exposure, in rare cases the live view may not display correctly. Crop] and [Touch AF] can be registered to [ADJ Mode Setting] of the C 2 [Customize Control] menu in the [Customize Settings].

Image Quality

I’ve talked to a few people who thought the GR3 might be a bit “too small.” Apart from adapting to the changed controls layout, I never had a problem with the new size. This tiny camera produces professional results and the fact that it’s so small means I’m a lot more likely to have it with me whenever I leave the house. You can’t really complain! In the [Snap Distance Priority] mode, [0.3m] can now be selected and Close-up photography is also possible. The Tele Conversion Lens GT-2, for example, works with the Lens Adapter GA-2 to extend the focal range of the GR III X from 40mm to 107mm which is highly useful when working with a fixed lens camera.

The Ricoh GR III is a compact 24MP APS-C format camera with a 28mm equivalent F2.8 lens. The third in a series of APS-C 'GR' compacts from Ricoh, the GR III has been a long time coming, but updates the GR II in some highly significant ways. Several Ricoh representatives have described the GR III to us as a 'labor of love' - keep reading to find out whether the work of the company's engineers has paid off. Key specifications: Approximately 24.24 effective megapixels deliver high image quality, and an anti-aliasing filterless construction delivers high-definition rendering even in the finest details. This feature can be added to the standard GR III model by installing function expansion firmware, which is scheduled to be released after the time of the camera’s launch. I’m typically an eye-level viewfinder kind of guy who enjoys the precision of framing my shots with an enlarged viewfinder image. Especially one where I can dial in my prescription with a diopter!Hands down, my favorite feature of any GR camera is the Snap Focus mode. In a nutshell, Snap Focus mode lets you set a fixed focus distance and use aperture to create the amount of depth of field you need to get your subject in focus. I missed having more control over the focus and the absent viewfinder made taking the photos feel just like using a mobile phone camera except with a higher quality screen. It is worth mentioning that if you go for the GR III X you can buy the GV-3 External Viewfinder which would absolutely fix this issue. The touchscreen shows excellent response, which makes it easy to set the focusing point or browse your images, although focusing performance overall is a little mixed. It's certainly an improvement on the previous contrast-detect-based system, but it can be unpredictable when set to the auto pattern, and sluggish when the light isn't great. It's fast enough for most scenes and subjects, but the standard on such cameras is high here now, and the GR III can't quite keep up with the competition (although it's significantly better here than one of its main rivals, the Fujifilm XF10). The RICOH GR III Street Edition, a high-grade digital compact camera that doesn’t include the viewfinder and the strap, is also scheduled to be launched in the autumn of 2020.
