Description

For hot summer days when you want to feel like you’re basking in the salty air of the Mediterranean Sea (the bottle’s even shaped like a rolling wave), Gin Mare Capri brings you straight to the coast with a single sip. Famously served with fresh cucumber (slices or fancy ribbons, it’s up to you), this light London dry combines traditional botanicals with petals for an unexpected floral quality. Its distinctive bottle and graphics are pleasing on the eye, while its smooth flavour will have you happily sipping away contently for longer than you care to admit. However, it’s known to be made up of only four different components: juniper, coriander, angelica root, and licorice. The slightly higher ABV (43%), was described by one tester as "nose hair-tingling strength", but they were pleasantly surprised by how smooth and well-balanced it was.

The 12 Best Gins of 2023 - The Spruce Eats

One of the reasons why gin remains so popular is that it can carry big flavours, so make the most of them. This is all thanks to the relaxation of the gin producing rules around a decade ago, which has meant that small batch gin makers have cropped up everywhere – and there are plenty of small batch gin makers on this list. And yet none are so pronounced as to cause cocktail clash – home mixologists could just as easily use this in a French 75 as a Bramble. Although juniper is always included in the spirit, contemporary gin refers to a bottle that tastes of other botanicals or flavorings.

The unique flavor profile makes it the perfect base for a huge variety of different long drinks, particularly those emphasizing fruity and berry flavors. This is their newest addition to the range, and while it’s still a classic gin, the inclusion of hand-picked, vapour-distilled lemons gives it a modern twist. You could also make your own sloe gin and treat family and friends with this range of refreshing gin and tonics. It’s exceptionally floral-forward, with lavender, rose and honeysuckle at the fore, before building to a crisp, citrus finish. There’s nothing run of the mill about it; the wheat-based spirit eschews the traditional botanical line-up in favour of a complex, fruit-forward mix of white peach, raspberry and Turkish rose.

Ki No Bi practices a very different distillation process than most gins by individually distilling six categories of botanicals: base, citrus, tea, herbal, spice and floral. These glasses are said to offer the best way for the drink to be tasted - the bulbous bottom gives the gin a chance to swirl around. No longer restricted to just a handful of the traditional best gin brands, the “ ginaissance” is taking over the world, one mouthwatering cocktail at a time. Flavored gin might be controversial to some but with a rising number of new flavors, it would be a shame to miss out on some of the best new offerings. This gives the gin a beautiful saltiness that's cut through with sharpness from a number of citrus notes.

It’s a drink with a difference that’s best enjoyed on the rocks or neat to really taste each and every botanical used. It’s made using Charles Tanqueray’s original recipe from the 1830s, proving that once again, with time comes expertise.

It doesn’t have to be made in London, however it must be re-distilled from a neutral base spirit and all flavours must be added during distillation. Besides classic juniper, coriander, cassia and black pepper, you’ll find a clutch of interesting botanicals emerging from the glass: lingonberries, vanilla and meadowsweet included. The result sings of spring, with an intriguing floral bouquet led by elderflower, rose and lemon balm.

However, most gins can be classified into four categories: London Dry, Plymouth, Old Tom or Navy Strength. Because the juniper is less distinct than old school gins, Highclere also makes a great entry point for any gin newbies.
