Description

Haynes clearly intends this to be a tale of female empowerment, but it's really just another revenge fantasy. In contrast to Lee is Stuart, Catherine’s neighbour in 2007, who is a psychologist and who wants to help her deal with her OCD. As the chapters alternate between the two narratives and the two completely different versions of Catherine, we gradually come to learn what turned the 2003 Catherine into the even-scared-of-her-own-shadow one of 2007.

The characters are real, and the dramatic tension created by Catherine's painful efforts to heal keeps readers tightly engaged. Four years later, Lee is behind bars and Catherine--now Cathy--is trying to build a new life in a new city. And it’s this theme that makes the book so suited to book group discussion, with our group having a lively debate over how we would react in the same situation. While I’m sure there are relationships that are are functional - are satisfying - sans sex, I’m not particularly interested in one.Increasingly isolated and driven into the darkest corner of her world, a desperate Catherine plans a meticulous escape.

Into The Darkest Corner | Elizabeth Haynes

Four years later, Lee is behind bars and Catherine–now Cathy–is trying to build a new life in a new city. She has given us a tour de force début novel that is both creepily disturbing and yet beautifully rendered. I really liked the scene where Catherine is not afraid of Lee anymore and fights back until he is on fire. From its uncompromising prologue – a young woman being bludgeoned to death in a ditch – Haynes's powerful account of domestic violence is disquieting, yet unsensationalist. Lee is such a horrible, manipulative person, and the way he destroys Catherine is painstakingly, painfully methodical.

Into the Darkest Corner : Book summary and reviews of Into

The difference between young, carefree Catherine of before and anxious, OCD suffering Cathy is shocking and it should probably come with a trigger warning for domestic abuse as the descriptions of it are visceral, but I recommend it as a great read. She started writing fiction in 2006 with the annual challenge of National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) and the encouragement of the creative writing courses at West Dean College. He’s closed-mouthed about his job, but charms her friends, and as she gets involved with this enigmatic figure, a man who can be loving and vulnerable, but also rough and controlling, her life changes in major ways. But what begins as flattering attention and spontaneous, passionate sex transforms into raging jealousy, and Catherine soon discovers that Lee’s dazzling blue eyes and blond good looks hide a dark, violent nature.
