If the Comandante has far fewer fines I can see how you'd get similar/better extractions at smaller grind sizes without astringency but the data doesn't make it seem like the Comandante's doing significantly better in that regard. A fun piece of the unique design of the Ode is a grind-size guide mapped out on the underside of the hopper lid.

The updates to the grinder have addressed the issues of the original grinder; namely the narrow grind range and issues with static retention. The active anti-static measures in the Ode Gen 2 use the ionizer to actively dissipate static while the coffee is ground, which is unique for a home grinder. It's obviously not a cheap product but if, like me, you make coffee at home every day this is a good investment. We're committed to helping you 'Brew Better Coffee', and that starts with providing you with the best, most accurate information possible. Some people have reported the magnet falling off of the cup, which renders this system useless, and in our testing we even had an issue where the cup was bumped off center after aligning it, causing grounds to miss the cup and end up pushing against the lid. While some users have complained that these recommendations aren’t all that accurate, particularly if you are using lightly roasted coffee, they are a good starting point. Above all else, the Fellow Ode provides a beautiful modern design unlike any other burr grinder on today's market. Home grinders often use a conical burr set, where a flat ring burr is adjusted closer and further away from a spinning conical burr in the center.

And it is essential to mention them as they may seem critical to you in choosing between this and another brand. Grind Screening Test: We ground 30 grams of coffee at a standard drip setting and ran it through a Kruve sifter with screens at 500 and 1400 microns to measure what percentage of coffee particles fell into the ideal range between the two. We’re joining Bristol’s exceptional, ever-growing, and diverse community, right in the heart of the city. This seems to be an issue more common in early production models, there are many users (like me) who've never once experienced this issue.

With a more precise grind, we noticed that coffee ground in the Ode Gen 2 produced more pronounced flavors in brewed coffee, especially with lighter-roasted beans. These two updates, in addition to the grind knocker, have reduced the retention from around 1 gram to as low as 0. This meticulous process ensures that the information you receive from Home Grounds is not only engaging and useful but also trustworthy and reliable. It’s an excellent grinder that's a huge improvement over the previous version and is now one of our top coffee grinder picks. We're not just some faceless corporation; we're a tight-knit crew of coffee junkies, who live and breathe the art of coffee brewing on a daily basis. After dialing in the grind to a good-tasting drip setting, we screened 30 grams of coffee and found that the Ode Gen 2 delivered a much more consistent particle size than the Baratza Virtuoso+, our other top pick, with more than 65% of the particles falling between the two screen sizes compared to the Baratza’s 45%.

Lastly, I compared the grind here, here, and here to my relatively well-seasoned Comandante at 5lbs. So we've heard that Ode owners who have upgraded their burrs say that their coffee now tastes sweeter and more balanced. However, it's still a manual grinder with quirks and issues of its own that will never be able to produce shots fine enough for espresso, Moka pot, or even some Aeropress recipes. You want to make espresso: If your favorite home brewing method is an espresso machine, Moka pot, or the Aeropress, you’re better off with the Fellow Opus grinder. This is a good idea, but some experts have pointed out that the recommendations are better suited to porous dark roasts than denser light roasts. The Fellow ODE has 64mm professional-grade flat burrs, 31 grind settings, and a unique single dose load bin for maximum bean freshness, Ode brings the café experience into your kitchen at a fraction of the cost.
