I’ve been helping the prison volunteers, those who take care of our prisoners. When that happened, I stopped volunteering. I refused to give all kinds of support and communication,” Cherry Pie shared. The irony wasn’t lost on Cherry Pie, an anti-death penalty advocate. For 13 years, she was active in the prison ministry. So, it hit her hard when it happened to her mother. Ngayon na pinatawad na kita sana patawarin mo na rin yung sarili mo. Tsaka sana magkaroon ka ng confidence na pinatawad ka na ng Diyos.” I still sin and fail Him every day. I realized how can I possibly ask for forgiveness when I cannot forgive and when there’s so much pain and hatred in my heart?” Pie said. It is so easy to dismiss the book as "oh, poor, little (but really super tall), white, male celebrity. Had a tough childhood and tough time making it in Hollywood." But when you get past the celebrity factor and see you are reading about a real person, struggling with what so many of us (especially us perfectionists) struggle with, the book become relatable with some snippets of sound advice.

I think this book is a benefit to anyone who is either a fan of Zac's or thinks they are alone in their Mental Health struggle. Jesus gives us further direction: “Pray for those who mistreat you.” He doesn’t mean to pray the imprecatory psalms! He means to pray sincerely for their well-being, which probably includes their conversion to Christ. You can rest assured that if the person does not repent, God will bring His righteous judgment upon him in due time. But rather than feeling sorry for yourself because you have been mistreated, feel compassion for this sinner who is headed for hell, if God does not intervene. Pray that God would be merciful in saving the person for His glory. A fine collection of poetry from the Islamic tradition, including such authors as Rumi (of course!), the Qur'an, Hadith, Qudsi, Zol Nun, Hafez, and others. Much of the poetry and excerpts derive from the Sufi mystical tradition. As with any form of poetry, one must read, reflect, then re-read and reflect again. Radical love requires responding to wrongs with positive ministry toward the wrongdoer, not with retaliation (6:27-30). Right away, he talks about how privileged he is and how he understands the messed up situation that is the mental health system and access to proper resources. However, you don't get Levi's story without his access to these things he is privileged to afford. You don't get his journey. So, yes, there is a lot of talk about medication and therapy and mental wellness 'retreats', but Levi has a platform to talk about his journey and the help he received and the things he learned, and I am beyond thankful to him for being vulnerable to share that with us. Yes, he is famous, yes, he knows it (even if he doesn't believe he's worthy of the 'big shot' title, because to many people (me included) he is), and yes, he has enough of a platform to relate things we all struggle with. The line, “forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sinned against us,” eventually made see her through the faith-crushing ordeal. However, it was not as easy as it seemed because the crime involving her case was far from venial. Look at your heart and apply the spirit of Jesus’ teaching to yourself, not to others. Clearly, Jesus is confronting our sinful motives of selfishness, greed, and standing for our rights. We’re all prone to blame others and exonerate ourselves. But Jesus here aims at our hearts and challenges us to apply it. When He says, “But I say to you who hear” (6:27), He is contrasting it with those who are under woe because they do not hear so as to obey. Those who really hear what Jesus says will not point the finger at others; they will point it at themselves and will deal with their wrong motives. To sum up, we should not take Jesus’ commands with a strict literalism that contradicts other Scripture, but neither should we dodge their cutting edge. They convict us all and we all need to grow in this radical love. Jesus’ teaching falls under four points:

Her pathway to forgiveness through giving talks made her discover that it was restorative justice she was doing – the restoration of her healing as a victim and the reformation of the offender. One of the questions I posed while preaching on loving our enemies from Matthew 5:44 was, How do you love the people who kidnap you and then kill you? The text before us is the Mount Everest of Christian behavior. Jesus sets the standard of love as high as it can possibly be set. He says that our love for others must match the love of God Most High, who is kind to ungrateful and evil men (6:35). He not only commands us to love family and friends. Jesus radically requires us to love even enemies who have aggressively hated us, cursed us, and taken what rightfully belongs to us. Jesus’ standard here is so high that many of us may respond as we would to the offer to climb Mount Everest: “No way!” We don’t even want to try, because it seems utterly impossible. The new piece with the 30 portraits is just beginning to travel, so let’s see what kind of impact it has. It’s a little too early to say since we’ve only shown it once for the opening in New York. Now it’ll go to Berlin, and Frankfurt, and all over the place after that. So let’s see what kind of impact that has. Listening to Zachary Levi for 6+ hours is literally the best way to consume this book. Hearing his emotion while reading brought this book to life.

Incredulous of the act, Michael thought Cherry Pie was out of her mind. At some point in the docu, he said he didn’t expect her to forgive him after what he did to the family matriarch.
