To select the best bottle sterilizers, we spoke with Tomomi Hayashi, MD, a California-based board-certified pediatrician, and Arunima Agarwal, MD, a New York-based board-certified pediatrician to find out what to look for in a bottle sterilizer and the benefits of bottle sterilization. We also reviewed guidance from the AAP, the CDC, and Texas Children's Hospital, on why it’s important to sterilize baby bottles. Moreover, we also put 20 bottle warmers, including some bottle warmer and sterilizer combos, through multiple tests at the Verywell Testing Lab in New York City with the help of Ebony Barrett, PNP. Another great feature is the easy-to-navigate digital screen that allows you to customize times and temperatures. There’s also a built-in light to help you see in the dark for middle-of-the-night feeds. We appreciate how easy it is to use the sterilizing function thanks to clear manual instructions (push one button after adding some water, and you’re good to go). On the other hand, the warming process was slightly confusing, and difficult to tell if it was working or not. Depending on the volume of the milk, the timer shows the number of minutes necessary to warm the milk, but the process is not intuitive. However, the Tommee Tippee steriliser unit, by comparison, took much longer to cycle. It was also hotter to handle, for longer, after finishing. This meant when we needed a bottle in a hurry a safe grip on the unit was essential. The Philips unit had a safe handle grip which keeps cooler for handling, a big plus compared to the Tommee Tippee steriliser ‘s bare heated plastic.

Ease of use, Ease of clean/descale, Clever Design, Flexibility, Build Quality and Overall Energy Use. For this review we wanted to compare the Philips Avent unit against it’s main competitor, Tommee Tippee steriliser. Why? Well when it’s 10:30pm in the evening and you’re deciding who’s washing up the bottles and who’s getting up during the night, we needed something that works. We’ve used both units, and thought it worth sharing our insights for others to make those night time feed more smooth for bottle fed babies. An unclean baby bottle is a breeding ground for germs and bacteria to grow and can make a baby severely ill if they consume breast milk or formula from the same bottle. A bottle sterilizer helps ensure you kill more bacteria and germs than a traditional cleaning. Plus, many bottle sterilizers do more than sanitize—some can warm or dry bottles. In addition to warming bottles, baby food jars, and milk storage bags, the First Years Gentle Warmth Bottle Warmer features a sterilizing function to clean baby bottles and pacifiers. The compact size of the First Years bottle warmer and sterilizer saves space on the kitchen counter. However, in return, you can only warm or sterilize one bottle (or pacifier) at a time. Still, it’s large enough to accommodate different bottle sizes, making it compatible with most brands. One of the most essential features of a bottle sterilizer is bottle compatibility, Dr. Hayashi recommends. Consider what types of bottles the sterilizer allows, whether shape, size, or material, and if you have to accommodate a lid for sterilization. Some bottle sterilizers don’t allow glass, Dr. Hayashi explains, such as the GROWNSY 9-in-1 Bottle Warmer, while others struggle to close properly with tall baby bottles. All bottle sterilizers on our list are compatible with most bottle brands, shapes, and sizes. For example, you don’t have to only use Dr. Brown’s bottles with the Dr. Brown’s Deluxe Bottle Warmer and Sterilizer—this unit is compatible with all of the company’s bottles and most other brands.

The Philips unit boasted a six minute cycle with auto shut off, for us this varied between 6-8 minutes. We’d like to say it was down to variations in the amount of water add manually by us, but we monitored it with the same liquid quantity and it still varied by up to a minute. Although, this variation doesn’t make too much difference the kwh’s do add up on an energy bill. Both the Philips and Tommee Tippee unit have non-concealed heating plates meaning they can be easily cleaned however the Philips unit has a plate that has no real “grooves” where white or orange scale marks from water hardness can form so when descaling with white vinegar it wiped out easily. We appreciate the clear instructions that are easy to follow, like putting water into the base at the “MAX” line and putting the steam plate on top. There’s even a light beeping sound to alert you when the bottle is done warming, but it’s not loud enough to disturb a sleeping baby. Both units are BPA free and boast the same claims of 99.9% effectiveness at removing bacteria. The Philips unit has most customisation for a variety of needs and the holders for bottle caps and teats means no more caps being cascaded over the kitchen floor as you try to pull one out in the middle of the night while blurry eyed. Most sterilization cycles are short, but some have built-in dryers that can take longer. If you use a single-bottle sterilizer, sterilization time is longer if you’re cleaning multiple pieces and switching them out between cycles. Typically, sterilization takes anywhere from a few minutes to 12 minutes, while drying cycles can take an additional 30 to 60 minutes. To save on cleaning time, we recommend a bottle sterilizer and dryer, like the Baby Brezza Baby Bottle Sterilizer and Dryer Machine, so you don’t have to wait for air drying.
