I also liked how it was involved in the rest of the story, including her relationship with her parents. But romantic contemporaries are suppose to just be fun and lighthearted, which is exactly what this book is.

There's a long history between Davy and Porter/Porter's family, so we (and Bailey) are also coming into their story after bridges have been well-burned. What I liked most about Alex, Approximately is that the story is so heartwarming and knee-weakening. And as the summer months go by, Bailey must choose whether to cling to a dreamy online fantasy in Alex or take a risk on an imperfect reality with Porter. Oh, and she has that cute little notion that there are different kinds of stalking and that everything is about intent and hmm that's not how it works? They were pretty honest with each other the entire time, and nothing really happened online after they started dating which was great. The romance is realistic- it's explosive in that first-love kind of way but also awkward and fumbling as they learn how to be close to one another. There were some cringey and cheesy parts, but ah, nevermind about those, all i wanted was to feel good. The choice is both simpler and more complicated than she realizes, because Porter Roth is hiding a secret of his own: Porter is Alex… Approximately. Once that foundation of trust was formed, I was ready to relish in every adorable moment they spent together.

There are some characters that are pretty aggravating and some storylines are randomly thrown in there for drama. While there are a few aspects of this book that could have been handled with a bit less bias towards its leads – Porter’s childhood friend Davy exists purely as antagonist, when actually his story and situation could have been explored with a bit more nuance – in all, Alex, Approximately builds off the idea introduced in a classic and well-loved rom-com and turns it into an engaging YA novel. I’d bet you a hundred thousand million dollars you didn’t think it’d be this: “‘I like your brows,’ she finally says. He’ ll be wonderful, and by the end of the summer, we’ ll be crazy in love, watching North by Northwest at the film festival on the beach, and I ’ ll have my hands all over him. One of her primary motives for going is to track down Alex, a boy she met online but has never seen in person.Like Bailey, Alex loves old films and, coincidentally enough, he lives in her father's neighborhood. He’s not that worried about Davy being on one of the most addictive and dangerous drugs in existence. Sometimes you have to endure painful things to realize that you're a whole lot stronger than you think. I loved that she was into movies, dressed quirky, her relationship with her dad and how she slowly started to open up and accept her flaws. I wish this story line had been given a bit more depth, so that it wasn't as black and white as Davy becoming a villain due to his vices, but I can totally understand that there was just too much going on to tackle that too.

Porter's former best friend takes on a sort of villainous role, but there's something still pathetic about him, an addict who was led down a dark path after a serious injury. I'd definitely recommend this, especially if you enjoy classic Hollywood movies as there's quite a few references! The one guy Bailey Rydell can’t stand is actually the boy of her dreams—she just doesn’t know it yet. Bringing these characters together means readers are treated to an enjoyable and light-hearted romance – complete with teasing, flirting, awkward meet-ups and blushes on both sides – and, like the characters themselves, their relationship also has its flaws. As it's too often the case, important issues are completely thrown off a cliff for the sake of the romance, and I'm not here for that : in Alex, Approximately, we have Davy, Porter's ex-best friend, who's got chronic pain since a surfing injuring and who starts doing drugs. It also has some great depictions of conversations with the love interest on what she's willing/wanting to do, and the role model boyfriend response that you should get to that in a heterosexual relationship - again, healthy reading material for teenage girls thinking about how to approach sex with male partners.
