Description

Costretto in sedia a rotelle non può più essere Moon Knight, il Cavaliere della Luna, il difensore dei viaggiatori notturni. A brutal extension of the original Doug Moench themes and supporting cast that might have qualified for Marvel Knights if it was released a few years earlier – it is that bloody, adult, and relentless. It’s also an immensely satisfying and well-illustrated read. Moon Knight by Warren Ellis – A collection of short stories exploring the mind of Marc Spector, changing the tone and the genre each issue offering a different approach to the character well worth reading. Collects Werewolf by Night (1972) #32-33; Marvel Spotlight (1971) #28-29; Defenders (1972) #47-50; Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man (1976) #22-23; Marvel Two-in-One (1974) #52; Moon Knight (1980) #1-20; Marvel Team-Up (1976) Annual 4; material from Defenders (1972) #51; Hulk Magazine (1978) #11-15, 17-18, 20; Marvel Preview (1975) #21; and Amazing Spider-Man (1963) #220. Collects Heroes for Hire (Vol. 3) #1-12; Spider-Island: Heroes for Hire #1; and Villains for Hire #0.1, 1-4.

Knight does not appear in this one-shot or series – he is merely briefly referenced. Collects this series of sequential one-shots, all from 2023: Murderworld: Avengers, Murderworld: Spider-Man, Murderworld: Wolverine, Murderworld: Moon Knight, and Murderworld: Game Over. Age of Ultron: Marc appears prominently in the early issues #2 & 4-5 (plus #10 and Avengers Assemble (2012) #14 AU), but this splinter timeline has no effect on his main story. See Guide to Marvel Universe Events – Age of Ultron Secret Wars: Marc appears in Deadpool’s Secret Secret Wars (2015) #1 and Ultimate End (2015) #4-5. See Guide to Marvel Universe Events – Secret Wars (2015). Collects Marc Spector: Moon Knight (1989) #1-34, Amazing Spider-Man (1963) #353-358, Moon Knight: Divided We Fall (1992) OGN, and material from Punisher (1988) Annual 2. Devil’s Reign: See Guide to Marvel Universe Events – Devil’s Reign. Marc appears in Devil’s Reign (2021) #1 & 4 in addition to his one-shot.Just like his Nightwing and Batman runs, Dixon let's Marc have fun being a superhero. Whooping ass, taking names, a little sexist with Marlene because...of course. Don't have to research much to see where Dixon is now days and who he writes with. But I'll save the political stuff for another day. The writing is solid enough to carry these stories even if they hold little to no weight. We know what will happen every issue, Moon Knight will survive, no big twist or turns.

Collects Conan: Serpent War (2019) #1-4, Supernatural Thrillers (1972) #3. The serpent god Set plans to usher in an eternity of darkness, and only the chosen warriors across time and space have a hope of stopping him: Conan the Barbarian, Solomon Kane, Dark Agnes…and the man known as Moon Knight! See Avengers West Coast. Marc leaves the cast after issue #41, which is a relatively pivotal issue for his ongoing story.

Moon Knight Reading Order

In this same period, Marc makes his first major team appearance in over 20 years in Secret Avengers. His Punisher OGN Kingdom Gone (August, 1990) led to him working on the monthly The Punisher War Journal (and later, more monthly and occasional Punisher titles), and also brought him to the attention of DC Comics editor Denny O'Neil, who asked him to produce a Robin mini-series. The mini proved popular enough to spawn two sequels - The Joker's Wild (1991) and Cry of the Huntress (1992) - which led to both an ongoing monthly series (which Dixon wrote for 100 issues before leaving to work with CrossGen Comics), and to Dixon working on Detective Comics from #644-738 through the major Batman stories KnightFall& KnightsEnd (for which he helped create the key character of Bane), DC One Million , Contagion , Legacy , Cataclysm and No Man's Land . Much of his run was illustrated by Graham Nolan. A.X.E.: Judgment Day (2022): See Guide to Marvel Universe Events – A.X.E.: Judgment Day. Moon Knight appears only very briefly in A.X.E.: Judgment Day (2022) #5.

We get a lot of fun adventures and I love Moon Knight as a character but to elevate these stories, Doug needed to come up with better villains. I think Doug wanted to ground Moon Knight in reality and tell more relatable stories so Moon Knight fights mercenaries and common terrorists but in the four colour world of comics - it makes a lot of the stories a bit bland. Issue #13 is Marc’s first encounter with Daredevil, which is also collected in Shadowland: Moon Knight, below. All in all, this was a monumentally disappointing affair. We sure as hell don't need more bog standard Moon Knight stories to throw on the wasted altar that is this character's sad legacy. I'll return to Scarlet Redemption again and again, but the rest of this book may as well not exist. 2.5/5

Where to start reading Moon Knight?

Marvel Studios’ Moon Knight: The Art of the Series ( 2023 hardcover, ISBN 978-1302945862 / digital TBA) First a crossover of sorts with the same story told from two different perspectives as Moon Knight and the Hulk cross paths without realizing it. Great stuff. Ms. Marvel & Moon Knight (2022) #1: See Guide to Ms. Marvel, Kamala Khan. Marc is also in Ms. Marvel & Venom (2022) #1. This occurs somewhere near his issue #15 Marc Spector is a willingly schizophrenic, playboy millionaire, former military mercenary, and sometimes cab driver who avenges crime while tacitly under the command of an Egyptian god, whose powers are both a blessing and a curse that deepens Spector’s insanity. Created by Doug Moench and Don Perlin in 1975, Moon Knight (alias Marc Spector) will soon be the star of his own Disney+ television series. It’s the perfect moment to explore the character’s history and read all his adventures.

Moon Knight officially joins the Secret Avengers in 2010’s Vengeance of the Moon Knight #10 and leaves the group in issue #21. As a member of this team, he will be part of two Marvel events: Fear Itself and Onslaught Unleashed. During that time, the character will also become a member of the Heroes of Hire during 12 issues. Collects Marc Spector: Moon Knight (1989) #39-51 & Special Edition, Moon Knight: Divided We Fall (1992) OGN (released here, though set in earlier continuity), Web of Spider-Man (1985) #93-94, and material from Marvel Comics Presents (1988) #152-154It turns out Marc is a sort of cause célèbre among writers of a certain age, as after his run with Brian Bendis he attracts a parade of big name attention. Another relaunch at Marvel with All-New, All-Different, sees Marc Spector waking up in an insane asylum with no powers and a lifetime’s worth of medical records. What’s false, and what’s real? This is Jeff Lemire and Greg Smallwood’s surreal take on the character, taking us on a trip forcing Spector to question everything he thought he knew and mostly finding a way to kill the past, his demons, his gods. To know more about Moon Knight, his crime-fighting activities, and other personalities, follow the guide… Oh boy, where to start with this dog's breakfast... Complex and nuanced character becomes generic, one dimensional revenge machine. Yawn!
