When a message from beyond the grave tell’s Janet to be brave, will she come clean and will she finally be able to move on with her life?

Janet Brown is still suffering from the grief of losing her 7-year-old daughter, Claire, 11 years ago. As the story develops and we learn the full extent of the circumstances surrounding Janets past, I felt even more for her and boy did I want to slap her husband Colin! It emerges that this happened in a car accident while Janet was driving, having been in the process of leaving Colin, and he has blamed her ever since and guilted her into coming back to him and allowing herself to be punished in perpetuity. Janet finds herself caught up in a situation and can’t remember anything , then when she remembers , she is stuck in a lie , now I couldn’t find it within myself to dislike her for it . We look at the real depths that our sadness can take us to, and how it manifests so differently in all of us, but also how we don't only mourn for the dead.

But things are not quite what they seem, and she finds herself having to develop a courage and resolution that seemed lost for ever, to break out of the chains of her own making. From being spoken to by journalists, to going on morning TV, and meeting the family of the young girl she saved. You feel the anxiety that situations induce in her yet she also has humour even if it’s the self deprecating kind. In If I Let You Go we meet Janet, a cleaner, a wife and mourning the loss of her daughter eleven years previously.

Then she becomes involved in a train crash, and is feted for saving the life of another little girl. I actually at times was very panic stricken for her , I was on the edge of my seat racing to finish this . It is completely believable in its description of Janet’s story, her crippling guilt, her constant grief for her dead daughter Claire, and her coercive husband, a taxi driver, who uses Janet’s guilt to control her. His character wasn’t nuanced or complex which made Janet’s situation (and how she found herself there) even more baffling. However, both stories are nuanced and multi-layered, allowing the reader to join the dots on the wonderfully character-led novels.

I was so engrossed in Janet’s story and had so much hope for her be set free from Colin and be able to live. One day Janet finds herself thrust into the spotlight after saving a celebrity chefs daughter from the wreckage of a train crash - she sees this as her chance to start over and finally be forgiven. I did like the ending , I think it has kind of been left to the reader’s interpretation to some extent , which I didn’t mind . As news spreads of Janet’s actions, her story inspires everyone around her and, for the first time, her life has purpose.

Like all of us would, she saw an opportunity and took it, spiralling into a lie that became almost impossible to bear. If you want a story to get its fingernails into you and have you both wanting to cover your eyes and not stop reading, then this is the story for you. A deeply human story that manages to be both heartbreaking and hopeful, I highly recommend adding this one to your TBR. I rooted for Janet from the first page, and in all her sadness and shyness, wanted the best for her.But Janet's story isn't quite what it seems, and as events spiral out of control, she soon discovers that coming clean isn't an option.
