More than 100 years after the last of these brutal acts of violence the mysteries that surrounded the events remain. It was a real pleasure to read, and re-read, and read again, and this will take pride of place on the book case, at least until I read it again! It made you feel as if you were actually investigating the case for real, not just reading about it in a book. The authentic documents include: A police notice issued on 30 September 1888 asking for information on the first three murders; Chief Inspector Swanson's report on the murder of Elizabeth Stride; the 'Dear Boss' letter - the first letter purporting to be from the Whitechapel murderer using the name 'Jack the Ripper'; Sir Melville Macnaghten's report identifying the three main suspects.

Pour yourself a Cognac, get your pipe and slippers, turn on the fireplace and settle in for a good winters read! Barnett later testified that despite the separation, they saw each other again outside Miller's Court several times after he had moved out, though only as friends. On 30 September 1888, the night of the "double event", the escape route taken by the murderer led to Barnett's home. His physiognomy resembled the person who was described accompanying some victims before their murders; above all, age and height match.Jack, der Aufschlitzer” – A German perception of the Ripper murders from 1888 to today, or: Jack the Ripper, the traveller beyond time and place. Concerning that only one page for every subject is available, the informations of course were kept short, but that doesn't break the reading enjoyment down. His eldest son Denis assumed responsibility as head of the family, until he married Mary Ann Garrett and moved to Bermondsey, on the other side of the river Thames.

Not only does it cover the crimes but gives a background on the people involved including the victims, the potential suspects and society at the time the crimes were committed. This is a great book for anybody fascinated by this famous case as it contains facsimiles of documents from the police archives.

This book describes on every page , and only on one page, the victims of Jack the Ripper, it starts with a short introduction of the life and the people of the East End during this century and ended with the main suspects of the murder series. It is a lovely item for his collection and I am so pleased he liked it as much as I thought he would! I can imagine Richard Jones pointing a member of his tour group over to this book or trying to sell it to them at the end of one of his excellent tours. All the information you expect to find and indeed handy for anybody who might want to look some specific detail up at ease.

Richard Jones is an internationally renowned Jack the Ripper expert, and head guide on the widely acclaimed Jack the Ripper Walks. It is unbiased, though the way it is set out makes it feel as if the murders have been trivialised a little for entertainment purposes. A quick look into the women murdered by Jack the Ripper, the environment the victims lived in, facsimile documents (which were hard to read) from Police enquiries to newspapers were included, and a rundown of suspects during and after the investigation. Richard Jones is the author of 18 books, two of which ( Uncovering Jack the Ripper’s London and Jack the Ripper: The Casebook) are about the 1888 Whitechapel Murders, and several others ( Walking Dickensian London and History and Mystery London of which cover other aspects of East End history.

Every page contains a nicely written summary of its subject complete with wonderful illustrations and side notes.

The last section is an interesting look at how modern Whitechapel compares to its Victorian equivalent.Once there, he said he could recognise Kelly, despite the dire state of the body, by the shape of her eyes and ears. in the book there are copies of the letters he wrote to taunt police, they are presented on seperate pieces of paper which is a really nice touch.
